Hello everyone,

I really have to get some of my clients sites in the Google Places as soon as I can.

I read many threads, but I feel I couldn't find the most effective way yet.

Please give me your best advice / experiences .

Thanks in advance

In my experience, Google Places is a total crap shoot. A year ago, I could consistently take a new customer and have them in the 7 box for dozens of keywords in less than a week.

Lately, I have had low competition entries take months to get any rankings and high competition take a week. With Google constantly tweaking their system, I have been unable to nail down a consistent method that works every time. I would suggest going to the WSO section and searching for a Google Places offer. There are some great ones out there, just look for something that is new with good reviews or one that has been available awhile but has been updated with the recent Google changes.

  • Just go there and sign up. You must be authorized by the business you are promoting. Of course that doesn't mean that you client will even show up. I agree with the above post.

The fastest way to get IN to Google Places is to 'add your business' and fill out all the details.

The best way to rank the listing is to make sure you fill out the details in the listing 100% correct. As in no spamming keywords and make sure you use the exact business name with NO ADDED FILLERS. Then submit that business, using the exact same details, to the 1,000s of citation sites out there.

Did you receive the confirmation code?
Just filling out the info doesn't put you there.
Citation sites are actually first order of business...and Google places is last.
Citation sites are yellowbook yellowpages etc. etc.
Look thru some listings and you will find some reviews from other sites.
yelp and so on...they don't really show anymore, but still you can do it.
Type in business # and see if it gives you google places...if it doesn't then you are not approved yet.

I agree, filling out the various directory/citation sites is the first step, not the last.

There are a gazillion directories out there but the ones that matter most, in my opinion, are the ones that show up when you search for that businesses keywords.

For example, search for "plumbers in seattle wa"

After the places listings you will see a lot of directories. Make sure your client is in all of those. Go 3 or 4 pages in.

Make sure the information is exactly the same in each listing, as near as possible.

There are lists of citation/business directories out there, just Google it.

Also, make sure they are on the Bing and Yahoo local listings as well.

When the Google Places listing is filled in, make sure you put pictures in that are all sized the same so it looks decent. Make sure you put a logo in also.

Put in videos as you make them.

Try and put in a couple of nice coupons, update them regularly.

Even with all of that, there is no guarantee.

        Hi Mike,

Citations are simply Business Directories that allow you to post your client's NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) and sometimes url.

When Google finds these listings, it adds to the authority of your client's Google Places listing/site.

If you need more assistance with your Citations, see my sig.

        Thanks

        Rob

The process of getting listed in google places isn't that difficult - however, ranking for alternative keywords in Google has proved to be a bit challenging. Citations, which is the primary food of Google Places have the business name, address and phone number. But let's say that you are trying to rank for a keyword where the keyword is <town2> plumbing, where the business is in <town1> - that's where it get's challenging. Google seems to like to put the business where the business is already located. I've got a client opening up a ups store mailing address in <town1> just so we can get the listing...

Interesting idea. I'd love to hear how it works out.

      • Keep in mind that for keywords that pull a blended result the algo is primarily weighted toward organic SEO factors, so having a 100% complete Place page and lots of citations is not what will get your client to the top. So you need to do solid on-site as well as good Place optimization to get good rankings for many keywords.

Would using the checklist on GetListed.org not be sufficient enough to at least get you ranked rather quickly in google places?

    mike-SEO,

    1) Fill out the Places account thoroughly, following Google's rules, being sure not to use keywords too many times or add keywords to the name of the business (which worked in the old days)

    2) Go to UBL.org and sign up for an Agency Account. You only need the $49 package (agency pricing) - nothing more.

    3) Go to DirectoryMaximizer.com and use their service and order 50-200 new directory listings per month for your client, being careful to use the right keywords and directory description. (They let you have several and will randomize it.)

    4) Make sure that your OPSEO (on page seo) is strong for your client and that you have congruent address info on the client's site that matches Places.

    5) Build other inbound links for clients (with city names in anchor text).

    Good luck.

I know you can add places or used to be able to add places to Google Maps, as a sort of point of interest and include the Citation.
I have tired this recently but haven't seen any improvement. Possibly because the points i am adding are saved to my 'maps' account. However, there was an option to make the addition 'public'!
Does anyone know is this technique works?
      Best

Fill out your Google Places page correctly and this could be a good source of backlinks if you are doing SEO. That's what I did. I didn't depend too much from it as a way to generate new customers.
