Need a Crash Course for offline newbie salesperson!

I have a new salesperson who is great but knows next to nothing about the things we do.

This woman can supercharge my offline efforts but I want her to know what she is selling.

I want her to be prepared and know the basics and be able to handle objections.

She needs to understand some about:

1. Web site design
2. Hosting
3. Google Places
4. Facebook for business
5. SMS marketing
6. SEO

Of course I could have her read this forum but as you all know that can take weeks. I really would like an existing crash course free or paid that I can hand to her.

I printed out the Jobless Dad discussion as her first reading assignment. I will have her listen to John Durhams Offline On Crack audio. This will get her started and motivated.

I'm just looking for a little detailed instruction.

Recommend something for her please.

Who better to teach her than you? Don't you know about these things? If not, what is your role in the business? I'm confused.

Of course I could teach her but learning what I know took time. Did you learn it in a day? Of course not.

If it was learned in a day there wouldn't be WSO's teaching people day in and out. This forum wouldn't be here.

I want a general outlined crash course of across the board general knowledge (not detailed) of offline services.

You want her to know the basics as in just the questions the clients will ask like "how much is hosting?" blah blah etc?

It's going to very difficult for her to sell anything without a truly intimate knowledge of marketing. When I speak, people listen, because I do so with the utmost confidence.

Unfortunately there's no shortcut to learning. Business owners are savvy, that's why they're business owners. Meaning that most aren't easily fooled.

If she can't answer a question that they have...there goes the sale...in most cases.

      Just my .02 cents.

True, but in training over 300 salespeople I have found that I can train them all day long. The only way to sell is to get out there and sell. You will lose a few, so what.

The salesperson will most likely NEVER reach your level of marketing expertise and will probably need to call for answers to difficult questions or clarifications for her entire career.

I had salespeople that could barely turn on a computer sell millions of dollars worth of technology to businesses.

Sit them on the phone, set some appointments and get the orders. Start them out on simpler projects so they don't need to be an SEO expert right out of the gate.

My question isn't exactly rocket science. Is there a general educational WSO or ebook for offliners? Not detailed...... just overviews to give my salesperson a jumpstart.

    Example questions from clients:

What is Google places and how does it work?
    What is reputation management?
You mean you can SEO Google places?
Bing Business Portal? You can do this in Bing as well?
What is SEO? Why is important?
Is it something that needs ongoing attention?
How can my business benefit from facebook?
I thought Facebook was just for kids you mean it is a business tool?
Well my little niece is on facebook surely I could do this myself!
Youtube: I thought it was just for dancing babies you mean I can market my business on youtube?
I have a web site why would in need to optimize it for search engines?
    etc etc etc.......

I mean there are a thousand different questions one might ask if one has no clue about web sites, Google Places, BBP, SMS Marketing, Facebook, SEO etc.

Maybe this question goes over peoples heads but this entire forum is based on marketing right? If this was your first day here and someone handed you cliff notes of what was discussed, it might save you weeks of reading and sorting through threads.

But I will digress and say it might be easier for me to write up tutorials myself or just buy individual WSO's on each topic and have her go through them.

This is just a suggestion but it is what I plan on doing for a salesperson I have coming on in a couple of weeks.

I will have him do some searches for local businesses. Have him look at some websites and at the Google Places listings.

That will be in the morning. Then, I will have him run software to harvest leads for selling Google Places listings.

In the afternoon I will have him call the businesses that have not claimed their listings, offer to send an email with a my personal video on what we offer and how it will benefit them. Then have him follow up and ask for the order.

Having a salesperson speak with a few hundred people and get the answers to their questions and objections will give more training in the shortest period of time than anything I have ever tried.

After he is comfortable with selling Google Places listings I will start him on mobile websites, following pretty much the same plan.

Keep us posted on your methods and results.

Ok those are the answers I was looking for. Good stuff there.

This particular woman has the gift of persuasion. I've known her for years and was always fascinated by her ability to do what she does.

So I think I will take both of your advice and educate her initially in the business but not too long. Then let her loose. I won't spend too much time "making sure she's perfect".

There is some advantage to her selling instead of me. I have to "dumb things down" when I sell to people because of my tendency to "dazzle them with technology" instead of just using laymans terms to explain the benefits.

John Durham has said himself in this forum he used to sell boatloads of sites back when he didn't really even know what search engines like Yahoo were. They sold websites because they were salesmen not because they were experts in building websites.

Selling the benefits and not the technical details will be her specialty.

I used to work as a personal banker here in texas. And I was our top seller for the 4 years I worked for this bank. I also happened to be the only person with no degree.

My success came because I wasnt some "financial guru".. But I studied persuassion, influence and a few nlp tactics since I was about 15 (I was always interested in that stuff).

Here's what I found to work best for me...although I wasn't a financial guru..I studied and memorized the features of the products I was selling. Then I studied and memorized why these features were important and how they could "benefit" my clients.

By doing this it became impossible to give me an objection that I couldn't overcome.

EX. I dont have the money right now

--Well that's exactly why you need this product mrs. jones. Our accounts offer 8% back every single month, thus ensuring you'll never be in another situation where you "don't have the money" to make critical buying decisions for your future.

The 8% was a feature not really a benefit.

So by learning and memorizing the features I was able to create benefits.

Also, as soon as I would meet with a client I would get them to talk by asking them small questions not really related to anything but for me they serve the purpose of getting the prospect to reveal his "problems or concerns" so that I could present a product that does the best job at fixing his problems.

so I would ask questions such as:
      how's the family
      how's work
tell me something interesting that has happened to you
its been a while mrs. jones, whats new
do you have any problems with your current accounts(sometimes its best to come out and just asked)

now once I have the prospect talking...everything I SAY is a pre sell for the next step in my sales process.

--So first I presell or over hype the fact that they have a problem.
-then I pre sell my idea on a product that i am 100% confident will fix their problems.
--then i presell the features...but I do it in a way that my clients can "see" the benefits.
-then I hit them with scarcity....This is why you need to by today, this high APR is only going to last for 48more hours etc, etc.
--Then I use a few closing techniques....If you haven't already I highly suggest you do some research on closing techniques, there is literally hundreds of them..but they work, trust me!
      -Then I close the sale

Each step hypes up the next step. its the same with Internet Marketing.

if you run ppc ads with adwords heres how things are really working.

your adwords ad pre sells your landing page.
your landing page pre sells your opt-in
your optin pre sells the features/benefits of a product which leads to a sales page
the sales page "should" go into greater detail of the benefits i.e preselling the product.
then using closing techniques and a call to action the process should end in a sale.

(of course this isn't the only way a sales funnel can work, But in its most simple form this way a good example).

"There are no magic wands, no hidden tricks and no secret handshakes that can bring you immediate success, but with Time, Energy and Determination you can get there!"

        Exactly.

That is salesmanship. The best car engineer, designer or mechanic is not usually the top salesperson.

Understand the customer, understand what they want to achieve and find a solution. It is up to the marketing company to find those solutions to the customer's issues.

        Thanks,

It took me less than a day to create a sales packet for my salesperson. I compiled an outline of the service with descriptions, threw in some quotes and research from experts around the web, screenshots from mine and other websites, a glossary and some links to further resources.

She looked at me funny when I gave it to her and thought it was overkill (she expected to do the research on her own), but she's found it helpful and she's doing a good job. She sells my service, she doesn't have to be the expert in it.

I would suggest Lynda(dot)com. Get a subscription for 25 or 30 bucks a month and they have a boat load of tutorials ranging from how to turn on a pc to how to expert level anything and everything.

Just a thought....but I've used the site myself when I needed to learn some css and a few other things that could bore you senseless...but some great tutorials on basic internet. There are some courses on SEO and PPC that I know she would find informative as well.
