  • I have a Question for you.

    Do you believe you can?

forget what people say. it's your business, selling what you want, anyway you want!

The market is big enough and we have the Internet for multimedia communications.

    Yes You Can.

p.s.- I've sold IM, Insurance, and investments over the phone.

        DnChamp,

My first thought is "YES" it can be done we do it every day. However with that being said these are highly trained Phone Sales Pros doing the Closing. The top 1/10th of 1% of sales people, I'm in the top 5% myself, however these guys and gals are in a whole different echelon. These are Power Pros...

I have a tendency to suggest do what your good at and outsource what your not. I would highly recommend hiring a Sales Super Star, they can make or break any business any time any place. Several warriors who bought my The Ultimate WSO - strictly used the Hiring Super stars manifesto to Take care of this issue.

I would highly suggest no matter what you decide to do... that it includes hiring a sales person of some kind...Preferably a PRO. We have been doing this for years and they are hands down worth their weight in gold day in and day out.

Hope that gives you some clarity... Best of Luck in Your Pursuit's

I doubt I'm in the top 1/10th of 1% of sales people.... I doubt I'm even in the top 25% lol. However, the majority of my business is with clients from different states. In fact, I have more out of town clients than I do local. To me it is normal.

If you guys make it seem like its a problem, then your lack of confidence will bleed through to the client.

It is normal, I do it all the time, many people do it all the time!

    Can it be done?

People have bought real estate investments without ever seeing the property they are investing in...

Thousands and Thousands of people have lost life savings to some voice over the phone promising them their greatest desires...

So, yes, selling without meeting face-to-face can be done...but are you up for the challenge of doing it?

    That's the true question.

It can be done but you will lose a lot of potential clients. When you meet Face to Face it ads that trust factor that the client find on eye contact. When you show them that you know what you are talking about and the are able to look at your eyes more people are willing to buy from you that just via email or Phone Calls.

Getting clients without face to face is much more difficult and a big numbers game. I prefer face to face meeting with clients, IMO, they will pay you more, the contracts will last longer and your closing ratio will be hire.

So, the answer is yes. It will just take more time and harder work to close deals IMO.

    DNChamp,

YES, it can be done. Thank God that this is the way we have built our business.

It is all in your mindset. Local clients (and we only have 2) think they can ask you to come meet with them in person (for free... off the "clock").

I think because most of our clients are "far away" that there is more of an "aura" to things.

That being said... you have to make it like you are really there. Phone calls, emails, videos, etc.

You should do webinars for your "face-to-face" meetings so that they can see your screen. And... you should do online video quotes after you have talked with them.

I think people are busy. They would be very happy not to see our ugly faces... just need to feel like we are really there.

In the online world... perceptions IS reality.

You make a VERY VERY good point. Local clients do think you can come and MEET with them at all times lol. The majority of my clients are not local. Today, I have closed 3 deals, one from denver, one from portland, and one from san francisco. I am from a small town in Illinois.

For those that think it is impossible... here is the thing that will really make you flip... these were one call sales, on web design and SEO, ALL that equaled over $1,000.

I bet some of you guys are better over the phone than I am... you just aren't getting the results cuz you aren't trying!!

I don't mind sharing at all, the answer is right in front of your nose.

I am able to do it, by trying. You definitely can't do it if you don't try. You guys are always going on saying how hard it was, but when I got into this I thought it was normal. I never saw this as unlikely, or incredibly difficult. I saw it as something normal and it is only a matter of time. I get sales from across the country. My local clients are more of a bother than the ones in colorado, or california, or florida. By tuesday or wednesday, I will have 6 more deals closed.

You can't expect to may one call sales, or make sales to those in other states unless you try. It is rather simple. If you don't try, you don't get the treat.

All good points brought up. My services will be for SEO and most would like to see you ( I assume) so im really putting it out there on the website to contact me via phone and then will get more info from them and really try and sell them via phone then in person. That much I can do

I'll agree with most of the folks above. Yes it can be done, I've done it. However...

Think about this for a second. Are you in offline just to make cash or to build a solid business?

I may get blasted for that last question, but you can get a lot of clients either way. Some people say they have never met a client and they do fairly well. I myself think that meeting people is a better way to go in the beginning... here's why:

Say that you meet with Joe the plumber. Joe is used to being part of a group (union or other trade group) that is based on a camaraderie a sense of togetherness. Knowing that, you meet with Joe and show him that you want to be part of his team and help him get further than he could himself, he'll appreciate it. Now after a few wins for Joe - successful seo campaign, google places top listing etc - you're part of the family. Joe knows, likes and trust you. So instead of the casual, "yeah I use this guy for my web..." It's "Hey call (insert your name here) I know him and he's awesome"

I'm a huge fan of the Jerry Maguire movie. That's kind of the same mindset I took when getting into offline. Build solid relationships and you'll be just fine.

This is one of those awesome threads where not only is there some great content and advice, but everyone is right!

No one method works for everyone nor all the time. You want to use your strengths and adapt your business model to captialize on what you bring to the table, and look to outsource the rest or adjust your model to allow your strength to shine. Thanks for all the great input.

        • top 1% ?
          top 10%?
          top 20%?

          How ?
          1. work ethic - Do Not Stop making Calls and ASKING for business

          2. don't focus on what they think of you - you call so many, the majority that dosn't work with you, thinks your a salesmen, pushy, no good, rude, no value, yada, Yada, yada, etc..., etc.., etc.., (as stallone says in 1 of his movies it's not how hard you can get hit, it's how hard you can get hit, And keep moving forward)

*don't remember the negatives (just like in sports,"let go" of the error's you made and re focus).

          3. Don't ever forget your selling yourself, so it's what you believe that effects results. ( I wish sales training covered the "psychology of the sale" more).

the way you see it (what are you buying about yourself and your services?)....typically is how you sell it IMO

It is irrelevant whether it's on the PHONE, in person, in an email, at a public event, or waiting in line at starbucks overhearing biz.people talking ....you are your business and you are the message.

          4. Respond, don't React to objections, rebuttals, and put-off's.

If I can do it, a cave man can do it.
and if we can to it ....

          You Can Do It.

Lots of great advice here, as you can see there are so many options. It is a matter of choosing your entry point. For me, I made a bunch of local businesses happy before I went into the nationwide client base. I did this so that I had enough clients under my belt to use as references for those I could not meet "toe to toe".

Once I had a local client base, I wrote some scripts, rehearsed them, and with my years of objection handling experience I found it quite easy to start getting clients outside my geographic area. Of course, this meant some direct mail and plenty of phone calls.

When it comes to phone solicitation, BrashImpact offers one of two solutions. He likes hiring a Pro Telemarketer. There are several great telemarketing companies you can use, but I have found that you can get some of these at 0Desk and Elance and few other places for better prices. I like outsourcing and have recently moved to that direction.

If that isn't in your plans, then you need to learn telemarketing. It isn't hard, but it definitely requires training. I have managed businesses and owned businesses that relied on their individual phone rooms. I have been training phone people and writing scripts for more than 30 years, and been around it for 40 years. Given good instructions and training to a willing and opened minded trainable person, that person can make all kinds of magic happen.

I've long thought, since this offline thing has become so popular, that I should bring in a training program to the forum for those who are getting stuck at this particular point of their offline careers. I do have modules built and the business plan structured. Maybe I'll do a continuity site for this soon.

Any ways, get some training and you will kill them on the phone. Just keep in mind there is a gold mine awaiting for you both locally and nationally. Personally, I like them both.

This is not meant to be any self promotion at all, but I literally JUST wrote this section about 5 minutes before I read this post in a guide I'm creating about how its VERY possible to run an offline business without ever meeting the ppl.

Dexx said it best. I have multiple clients that I have never met before and have no idea what they look like, but I get a check from them in my mailbox every month.

I also have high end JVs with people I have never met before.

Leverage the ability to pick up the phone and sell someone across the country your services and grow your empire!

    Best of luck!

I'm doing this now! I saw a realtor post a tweet saying he needed some Wordpress and SEO help and so I responded and got the gig. He lives in my state but I've never met him. Since I do all my stuff online (click the link in my signature read how - it's just a link to a thread I posted) it was very easy to setup and bill for. Once he saw the speed and quality of my work he wanted me to do more stuff.

I've also done SEO work for people in Colorado, New York, Ireland. IMO the easier you make it to do business with you (always answer your phone, do everything online) the more opportunities you can give yourself.

It's not that hard to meet with people, at first it is nerve-wracking but after a few times it's no big deal. Also, I get a lot of clients locally that have been burned by people over the phone selling SEO that aren't local and they are only working with me because I want to meet with them face to face and because I'm in town.

Also, I hardly ever talk to my clients and they never want to me at all hours just because I'm local...

I've been saying this for a while and everybody thinks I'm grumpy or have flawed logic. SEO is a profitable service to offer clients... the reason people get burned is because the ones offering the service don't know what they're doing. The guys they outsource to are building backlinks, but not getting results.

You guys who deal only with local businesses, are going to burn bridges too if you only have average skill with SEO. It happens.
