Multiple website for one company good idea?

I have a local off-line company. There are a number of competitors in my market that are very established and been sitting on page 1 on google for along time. I want to beat them bad.

We are redoing our company website, from flash to a premuim wordpress template.

The website that we already have, the domain is firstlastname.com

I just purchased 2 exact match domains for the local keywords that I want to rank in google. Since domain name was cheap, already have unlimited hosting and have a premuim wordpress theme I thought it would be a good idea.

I want to blow my competition out of the water and rank #1 in google for as many keyword searches as possible.

I thought if I have my 3 sites:

firstlast(name)photography.com
cityweddingphotographer.com
cityphotography.net

The 2nd and 3rd domain, once you enter the site, our main business name (first last (name) photography) will come up, each site will look different but have the same branding image.

If I could get them all on page 1 of google, we most likely will have a increase of business.

I think this is a good idea but wondering if anyone see`s this as a bad idea?

Thanks.

If you can take each website and give it a totally different look with different titles then you might get on page one.

Just take a look at what your competitors have on their site and this should give you some ideas on how to make your sites look.

Just make sure that you don't copy their work or designs. Google will not give you any listings on their organic search engine.

    9999,

Having three websites in the same local niche is not a bad idea... BUT:

    1) Make sure you don't spread yourself too thin. Better to have one great-ranking site than 3 mediocre ones.

    2) Google ranks PAGES not sites. Therefore... if you pay attention to your inner pages and develop specific pages for specific keywords, very keenly optimized for those keywords and with links coming in with those keyword phrases in the anchor text... then you can get literally hundreds of pages ranked in your niche.

Note: We have a client in a service business that has over 1000 1st page rankings, 200 of them in the top 1-3 positions... so I know this can be done.

    3) Knowing human nature... my best best is that you will end up with three mediocre websites. I hope I am wrong. I would start with your best domain name and really work hard on that site and develop pages just for that site and only when it is good and strong... move to the others. (Get them up, with words on them so they can be aging while you work on the others.)

    4) Pay great attention to your URL structure. That is key in local search.
    Example:
    denverphotography.com/denver-wedding-photographer
    denverphotography.com/wedding-photographer-denver
    denverphotography.com/wedding-photography-denver

Each of those can be pages with content geared specifically for that keyword, mainly... making sure that your keyword phrase is used in the (exact same order) in the H1/H2s, title tags, etc.

Summary: Good strategy idea. Get all three up and running. Start with your strongest and stay there until it is really dominating. Then move to the others (unless you have the time and $$ to do all three at the same time and properly).

    Good luck.

      denverphotography.com/wedding-photographer-denver
      denverphotography.com/wedding-photography-denver
I just need some clarification on URL structure please.

denverphotography.com is the website, everything after / is the keywords?

I am guessing here but say you used wordpress, installed all in one seo and typed in as your 3 keywords:

denver wedding photographer, wedding photographer denver and wedding photography denver

I am guessing again but you would then put 1 keyword into each page/menu of your website. When say a person clicks on about us menu that is where the /denver-wedding-photographer comes up in the URL?

      Thanks

We have many law firms here that have multiple websites that reflect different areas of practice. But a more common, and what seems to get them better ranking is a main practice website and a blog on a separate domain. In the law firms case, the blog serves as a news, article, and information source for a lot of timely information.

To use the photographer example, you could have the primary website, and a blog with articles and information about weddings, corporate functions, publicity, etc.

Just thinking outloud and putting in my 2 cents.

Ranking multiple sites for the same keyword is easy if you have a strategy and follow through with it.

    Rank your site number 1.
    Then rank your facebook page
    after that go for twitter
Yelp would take the #4 spot.
Citysearch, kadzu, etc can help take up the rest.

Plus your other 2 domains and their respective pages will have you at the entire first page.

It is great to rank for keywords with a lower number of searches and less competition. Using lead-generation website is a great idea too.
