How my SEO knowledge got me a promotion yesterday!

I work at a drug rehabilitation center. I've been working there for about two months as a 'tech.' I keep an eye on the clients and make sure they are where they are supposed to be and not doing anything wrong. It has been pretty easy work. My second week there I got a 50¢ raise to $7.75/hr.

When I originally applied, I applied for the cook position that the newspaper advertised that they were hiring for. So I was amazed that they called me for something higher up than a cook, although a tech is still on the bottom of the totem pole.

So the day before yesterday I went in for work and as I was about to clock in I was talking to a co-worker about the SEO and internet marketing that I do/used to do. The marketing people overheard me and started asking questions. They need SEO and a webmaster badly but they can't grasp it.

We talked for 2 hours until they got off at 5. The conclusion was that they were going to sign a contract with me (they being the center in general) to manage their website and do their SEO. So I came home from work that night and the next morning (yesterday morning) I sent them a proposal that told them what keywords we should try to rank for in order to get more traffic, leads, and ultimately clients. I outlined how I thought the campaign should go and everything.

Well, they replied and said that they talked to Frank, the owner, and they want me to move up to marketing! So I am starting to train a new guy to take my place starting tomorrow. But until he is ready I am doing marketing from 3-5 every day and then the rest of my 8-hour shift I am doing my normal duties.

Today I get my desk and office and I am taking my computer up there because it has all my SEO and web software. In a couple weeks, tops, I will be full-time marketing! I'll be in an air conditioned/heated office with two lovely young ladies 8 hours a day.

This is ideal for me because I spend all of my time at home on a computer doing this kind of stuff and when I am at work I am in my head thinking about doing it. So now I get to do it all day at work and I can even work on my other marketing endeavors (SMS) at work as well.

I'm very happy! But, our marketing girls who have degrees (one has a Bachelor's and the other is about to finish with her Master's) only get paid $8.50/hr! You'd think we'd get paid more because marketing is essential to any business and this business makes so much money off of each client that the marketing brings in. I'm hoping that if I am able to take page one for our keywords we will get much more business and I will be able to request a raise, as it will be my efforts that will be increasing our leads and client intake dramatically.

Woot! I didn't think my knowledge was worth a full time position anywhere, especially seeing that I have no degree or anything, but the girls were blown away by my knowledge of SEO. Now I just have to learn more and come up with a good formula to beat out our competitors. I know how to do most everything, but when it comes to SEO it's all about your formula, I guess. Some say it's all backlinks, but I don't believe that. I will be doing linking, negotiating sales and trades of links, writing articles for our blog and to submit to article directories, etc. The whole nine yards!

And just now, she went ahead and emailed me this. =)

It's settled, your moving to marketing in two weeks. Got that desk over here so you have a place to be. Yeah! Frank said he thinks you are just the guy he was looking for so...you need to know your worth!! K

    Congrats.

My current position I got in a similar way. But they still won't let me do the marketing side full time. I do sales and marketing and most of my time and pay comes from the sales side.

Congrats, but man $7.50 for marketing work? Did I miss where you'll be getting paid more than that? I HATE being negative in any way at all since I know how happy you are about this new position, but your services are worth WAYYY more than that. Then again if you are truly happy with that and you like what you are doing, then more power to you!

I personally would just want more

It pays to show what you enjoy, even if it is for a starter position. The experience and addition to your resume should help you move somewhere else if they don't increase the pay. Congrats.

Oh, I definitely want and need more. My lifetime income goal is about $17.50 an hour, working a 40-hour work week. So I'm getting closer every day! But this will get me out of the extreme Texas weather, dealing with ass hole clients, having to go to daily AA and NA meetings, working late nights, etc. I will enjoy the work conditions so much more, so I'll be glad to get a small raise and move into an office where I'm on Warrior Forum all day!

I'm sooooo close to being able to launch my SMS service. Once I do that, I could easily quit this job and reach my lifetime income goal in no time at all. Sooooooo close. So I'll do this for now and get paid crap because I'll be able to work on my entrepreneurial endeavor from work, as well.

I also don't think I can demand much more when I have no degree, no resume, nothing except my word to say that I know what I'm doing.

        Well done Larches.

Not sure what a Lifetime Income Goal means but the field that you are operating in by pure chance happens to be very lucrative.

So you re-do their website and do some SEO but this is not the thing that really brings in the money for these places.

Substance abusers don't tend to google for help much, they are usually referred by doctors (hint on where your marketing activities should be)

I'm now going to talk about the UK but I imagine US to be the same.

How they make their money is on what is called the rate of recidivism.

I wont presume anything so no offence: Recidivism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you can lower the rate for the owner he will open his wallet for you.

A 10% relapse will earn more than a 20% relapse and get more funding from either government or private equity investors depending on whether it is a state or private entity.

Reason being these places only exist on one thing. Reputation.

So lower recidivism means better reputation means more referalls means more return to whoever puts in the money.

And recidivism is what happens after the person has left the clinic.

So this is where SMS comes in.

I can't find the study as I don't recall which paper I read it in but alcoholics who receive daily text messages relapse less than ones who don't. Same with drugs. So set it up with a daily autoresponder type thing.

You could further set up a forum site hidden behind a log in on a webpage as many patients don't necessarily want to talk on the phone but may want further support.

        You get the idea.

You can set up FB and Linked in for doctors groups and market that way.

Everything you do from now on you should document and in a year or two you have a 'follow through' manual any place in the US can follow as long as it was successful in a) aquiring more customers and b) reducing the recidivism which leads back to a)

Guess what your $10000 per private clinic, independent consultancy job will be?

After all you will have been there, done that, know the costs involved in the work, know the results and have a case study and you haven't paid a penny of your own money to get the info.

Hope that gives you some food for thought on how to use some of the things you are learning but in a different way from what you imagined.

I would appreciate it so much if you could find that study for me so I could present it to my employer. He most likely will not approve the idea without something backing the idea.

And I thank you so much for the food for thought!

Congrats to you Larches, this sounds like an excellent move for you to build up your resume and work on your other projects until you're ready to strike out on your own. Well done!
