This marketing company contacted my business and told them something along the lines of:

They track what people talk about via gmail, android phones, etc. Pretty much anything Google owns. Then, when the people go to youtube or something, since they have tracked their geographical area and what they are talking about, youtube will show an ad for my company.

For example:

John emails Jim saying he's interested in new shoes.

Then he goes to Youtube to watch a video. The ad pops up, but since he sent that email, the ad is for a local shoe store.

What do you guys know about this? Is this even legal? Is it work $299 a month for 10,000 impressions? They wanted me to look into it, but I don't know if I like the idea very much.

Yeah, but that is all in Facebook. Facebook can monitor what you do on Facebook and offer you relative ads. I don't know how this marketing company would be able to monitor people's emails, android phones, searches, etc and offer them ads on Youtube and such promoting something that they would be believed to be interested in.

I'm pretty sure they're bull****ting, because Google already does this with adsense.
If you ever watch the ads that appear on the side of Gmail you'll see this in effect.
I reckon they're just trying to sell you on Adwords!

It's the real deal.....ATT tried to sell this to me. They called it "follow me advertising" and I see it all the time......
If I go to Verizon wireless website, the next thing I know there's a ATT Mobile banner on the right of my screen, I go to TD BANK and then i Get a Chase banner.....If you pay attention, you will start to notice it.

I couldn't tell you if it works, because I didn't buy the package.

        David,

How can this "JHE Marketing" have access to Google's database? You actually think Google gave this company access to ALL of their user info?

Obviously Googles makes certain things public such as search volume for keywords, etc but it wouldn't make sense if they could drill deep in their database.

Facebook serves up ads based on the information you supply in your profile, for example dating ads if you're listed as single...and also on your hobbies and interests, pages you like etc. It's easy for Facebook to deliver very targetted ads.

I don't believe any company can have access to Google records/databases etc.

Well, what they told the other marketing lady was that for $50 they would create a demo video ad, then people in the geographic area that we are targeting will see our video before Youtube videos and on their Gmail, as well as on their Android phones or something along those lines. I will call them and record the conversation to show you what they say they can do tomorrow.

I think it's BS. I just need someone with more experience and that knows more to agree with me that it's totally BS so I believe in my beliefs!

Is it the same thing as banner re-targeting? That in itself is an awesome tool, it's when an ad follows you. Ryan Diess uses it when ever they are doing a new campaign.

First of all I would like to make one thing clear... JHE Marketing is just another face to an old and ongoing scam... the eLocallisting Scam. JHE Marketing is owned by Jeff Einstoss who has been involved in scamming small business owners since 2003 when he was at Zone Com Inc. ZoneCom which was one of many companies he has had to open, close or sell. All eventually failed because of false promises and most of all lack of knowledge and product. His knowledge and education of search algorithms and online marketing come from illiterate bloggers who became experts overnight. Jeff is NOT an expert whatsoever in SEO or any other computer science related field, just look at his website it's a complete joke. Every service stated on the site is outsourced either to India or eLocallisting, his website which is an old and outdated open source Joomla install (1.5 to be exact) wasn't even installed correctly, its running on an outdated Ubuntu server which has already been SQL injected, you can't even create an account on his site successfully or safely. It's ridiculous!
Jeff is a business man and only looks at monetizing anything for a profit at any cost because he has done this for years and has found incredible loopholes in conducting business through contracts. Jeff Einstoss and JHE Marketing is a perfect example of what is wrong with Business in America, all promises and no delivery and if you have a complaint you might as well get a lawyer and show up at the location, they will do everything in their power to avoid you.

JHE Marketing is just one of many business names he runs, he cannot uphold his reputation or integrity online. He needs to change his business name every couple of months and in some cases years to stay in business.
The Companies listed below are ones you want to stay away from they are all the same scam with a different face. All the people running the companies below come from the same source ELOCALLISTING.COM. elocallisting is the central hub that works in the background as to not expose itself due to the amount of negative feedback on the web over its history. Instead of ruining the reputation of the main company they knowingly ruin the reputation of all these remote resellers simply shutting down and reopening new resellers once one has had its reputation damaged.

Here is a List of of all the companies you have probably gotten calls from... because they are all the same.

    JHE jhemarketing(dot)com (Jeff Einstoss)
    Vigits Video Marketing (Jeff Einstoss)
    pepperbottletech(dot)com (Todd Johnson)
elocallisting(dot)com (Tim Judd Ralph Williams, Carolee Collins, Phil Collins, Jeff Einstoss, Todd Johnson, Steve Espinosa)
    mylocally(dot)com (Carolee Collins)
    fastfoundtech(dot)com (Tom Jones)
Pixelfish "Temecula" (Tom Jones & Steve Espinosa)
    Legacy Dzynes (Jay Jones)

Here is a list of the elocallisting ripoffreports, you will find indentical negative feedback because it's the same sh!tty "product" with a new name.

Obviously this person is a DISGRUNTLED EX-EMPLOYEE who couldn't cut it. However. This is Legacy Dzynes, and I am appalled to see my name along the list of JHE Marketing. It is true I have done CONTRACT work for them in the aspect of WEB DESIGN, but I have NEVER SOLD THEIR PRODUCT as a reseller, nor have I referred any of my clients to them. My work alongside them was indirect, providing websites to their clients who needed one. This post was also posted on another complaint board under the name of Amy B., who coincidentally was a former eLocal Listing Employee that left a couple of years back. The name Brian Osterhout is a current eLocal Listing account manager that has NOTHING to do with JHE Marketing... Nor do Tom Jones or Steve Espinosa have NO direct relation to JHE Marketing. The only coincidences between all of these individuals is that at one point the owners of JHE used to work for eLocal Listing.

I'm not so sure about JHE Marketing, but I believe what they are talking about is banner re-targeting.

Basically how it works is that when you visit a company's website they will put a cookie on your computer and then when you go to a site where one of their ad partners is advertising, their ad will show.

As for reading Google e-mails and stuff like that, I think that might be an exaggeration, if not an outright lie.

Also, when it comes to Cookies, clearing your Cookies out of your internet cache usually won't work to stop this anymore. You need to look at Flash Cookies. They are kind of backdoor cookies that are now being used by most major websites. To get rid of those you have to use CCleaner or something similar.

Let me quickly clear a few serious misconceptions up for you guys.

First, yes, Google can and does mine data from email/conversation content, just as it does from searches, on-site navigation (any site with adsense allows google to see every single page you are on, and for how long), YouTube vids you watch, people you communicate with, where you go (any G services on your cell phone?), and many many more.

Here is a link to their patent application re: contextual ad data gathering via email data mining; from 2004 - http://epic.org/privacy/gmail/patents/20040059712.pdf

Here is just one of the hundreds of paragraphs contained within:

      [0054] FIG. 4 illustrates using internal e-mail information and/or
external e-mail information to select one or more ads in a manner
consistent with the present invention. An e-mail document 410 may
include internal e-mail information 412. In addition, the e-mail
document 410 may be related to external e-mail information 414. The
external information 414 may also, or alternatively, include e-mail
derived information. E-mail relevant ad selection operations 420 may
      use e-mail information (e.g., 412 and/or 414) of the e-mail 410 and ad
information 430 to select one or more ads from a set of ads 430. The
selected one or more ads may be further refined, filtered, ordered, etc.
by other operations (not shown). At a recipient e-mail application (such
as Outlook from Microsoft for example), an instance 440 of the original
e-mail 410 is provided. The instance 440 may include at least some
internal e-mail information as content 442, such as a text body from the
original e-mail 410, as well as one or more ads 444. Alternatively, or in
addition, the one or more ads 444 could be rendered in association with
      (e.g., in a pop-up window, in a pop-under window, etc.) the e-mail 440

      And second,

Facebook is NOT limited to tracking and mining your actions and data within their site. ANY website that uses something which accesses their API is basically a hook for FB to cross-site monitor you.

Cookies should be obvious here, but also, think websites with a 'Like this' button, or a 'Share this on Facebook' button. Bam. The second you went to that website to look at green pantyhose fetishes, Facebook knew. And when you left that site 15 minutes later and then had a discussion with your girlfriend via FB chat, it knew you were lying to her when your answer to "What did you do today?" was "Oh not much..."

A few links I suggest you all read up on (no offense, but for this field, many of you should know this kind of stuff and how it works):

      Facebook tracking is under scrutiny

This is how Facebook tracks you

While we're at it, here is an extra two bonus links, for those of you that seem to really not understand the extent of how much is tracked, logged, and catalogued online to be sold off:

Private companies selling tools to mine data and track everyone: >Wikileaks - The Spy files

CarrierIQ rootkit busted for being in all blackberry, droid, and apple phones, monitoring video, audio, text, location even when the phone is off: Carrier IQ: What it is, what it isn't, and what you need to know -- Engadget

this is beyond stupid for reasons you do not obviously

Secondly. JHE is not related to eLocal and eLocal is anything
but a scam. How business profiles that really drive qualified
calls to hungry businesses for huge ROI is a scam, I
    have no idea.

There simply is not enough of anything here to continue any

Thats true, and a line of BS at the same time...

The whole "Follow Me" thing has been around for a while. It's called Tracking Cookies.

Ever do a search on Google and then go to a social Networking site and the Ads shown are eerily all about what you just searched for on Google?

That company isnt the one serving the ads...it's based on what is already going on in your Temp folder on your computer...it's cookie Tracking!

Turn off your cookies and it won't work...

Google uses it to present what they feel is content relevant to you. It works across all their web properties which is why what you search for on google will affect what is presented in Gmail or on youtube.

The Data collected isnt personal...it just targets specific keywords and trends in your surfing habits.(At least they say it isnt personal)

Google doesnt sell your personal info but they will sell or rent data regarding your online habits to other advertising networks. By using Google you agree to their Privacy Policy...if you read it they actually disclose that they do so.

"For the Google Display Network, we serve ads based on the content of the site you view and may also use other partner data to target ads. For example, if you visit a gardening site, ads on that site may be related to gardening. In addition, we may serve ads based on your interests. As you browse websites that have partnered with us or Google sites using the DoubleClick cookie, such as YouTube, Google may place the DoubleClick cookie in your browser to understand the types of pages visited or content that you viewed. To serve ads that are relevant and tailored to your interests in applications or other clients that use an anonymous ID, we may use information about your activity in applications or other clients. Based on this information and/or anonymized partner data, Google associates your browser or anonymous ID with relevant interest categories and uses these categories to show interest-based ads. For example, if you frequently visit travel websites, Google may show more ads related to travel. Or, if you download a golf application, Google may show you ads related to golf. Google can also use the types of pages that you have visited or content that you have viewed to infer your gender and the age category you belong to. For example, If the sites that you visit have a majority of female visitors (based on aggregated survey data on site visitation), we may associate your cookie with the female demographic category. In addition to ads based on interest categories, Google allows advertisers (including Google) to show you ads based on your previous interactions online, such as visits to advertisers’ websites. For example, someone who visited the website of an online sporting goods store can receive ads about special offers from that store.
Google will not associate sensitive interest categories with your browser or anonymous ID (such as those based on race, religion, sexual orientation, health, or sensitive financial categories), and will not use such categories when showing you interest-based ads."

Advertising Networks use similar cookie tracking to present ads they feel are relevant to you.

Basically it would seem they are fooling people in to paying them for what is already taking place...since they are not an Ad Network or Google themselves I doubt they have the power to affect the Ad Networks or Google for that matter.
