Google Places Confusion

Hello

We are looking at providing the specific service of Google Places to a range of companies but have been stumped on a few aspects , it would be great if someone could shed some light on a few questions?

1. Once we have fully filled in a companies Google Places, on average how long does it take for a company to appear in the 7 spots?

2. If they do not appear in the 7 spot due to competiton of other companies doing the same, how do you explain this to the client?

3. Do you charge a monthly fee or a one time price.

4. On a WSO we saw, there seems to be around 10-12 different steps so say we charge £197 ($310) , is this to much?

We would be so grateful if someone could fill us in as we are missing what we think maybe important pieces to the jigsaw.

Many Thanks

Lorna and Dave

    1. I have had success within days, other times it can take a few weeks to a month.

    2. I don't take on a client I can not get results for. If for some reason nothing happens, it is due to the competition having more citations and reviews, if that is the case it is only a matter of time and I explain that before and charge appropriately.

    3. Yes... sometimes I have included it in a web design package, other times just a one time price, and others I go monthly.

    4. Nothing is too much as long as you're providing value for the business. $10 is too much if you aren't able to bring them additional business. Sometimes you can get away with charging 800-1000+ it depends entirely on the client and what you can really accomplish.

What you charge also depends on how much you are doing for their goog places listing. If all you are doing is claiming it and placing in accurate info, that's a basic service. If you are adding videos, photos and other things that really make it stand out, that you can charge more for. If it requires updating over time, you could get a monthly fee for that as well.
As someone else stated, it could be hard to outrank competition for goog places, but you may be able to accomplish this with the keywords you choose.

      Answers:

      1. The answer is don't overpromise and prepare them upfront that Google can take up to 2 months, and that it is out of your hands.

Explain that Google, in less than 2 years is creating a website for EVERY business in existance in the world. (barring a few countries I think). It is a gigantic undertaking and due to recent manual review processes in place, it can take anywhere from a couple weeks to 2-3 months. It is far from being a perfect process and has many hickups.

That is what we do and it sets the expectations correctly upfront.

      2. If you cannot outdo the competition in obtaining ranking in 7 spots, then what are you selling? If you are just selling to setup the Google Places listing, and that is all, then you are doing them a disservice by NOT explaining that just having a GP account doesn't get you anything, you have to be in the first couple spots to get results. You are wasting their money. That is my 2 cents.

      3. We charge a monthly fee for organic SEO and GP optimization included. You really need both now a days. First month is twice whatever the monthly fee is.

      4. I agree with others, if they value it, then it doesn't really matter what the cost is. We normally charge $300-$350/mo for a small/mid sized city organic SEO and GP optimization combined. First month $600-$700.

      Hope that helps.

Under promise and over deliver, it depends on the competition, how many keywords your ranking for and the time involved, local seo is definitely a monthly fee whether it be 100 a month or 2000 a month, you have to see how hard is it going to be to get on that map!

I'm with Norman on this one.

You can't just start offering Service X and expect people to buy if that's not what they want or need, and especially if you don't know anything about it.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason for his post.

      1. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months, depending on the competition/city/etc.

      2. Clients should know upfront that it can take time, sometimes a good amount of time. I just keep working until their listing is on the first page.

      3. Both. An upfront setup fee and then a monthly fee. Sometimes I waive the setup fee.

      4. I've seen local companies charge $1500 for setup and $750 per month.

      Hope that helps.

I Couldn't have said it better, Jeffrey! The only thing I would add is on pricing... DO NOT GIVE THIS AWAY!!! In my opinion, GPlaces is one of the most slippery and fastest moving targets out there, to keep them on top does require some effort, although nothing substantial once you get them there, but if this is a good client (i.e. a lead to them is highly valuable), you should have no problem getting a minimum of $450 per month on an ongoing basis!

I know you will rock it!
