SEO question for local clients

After deciding to "go back to basics" with site building and SEO for clients, I picked up a few WSO's. The two from Lee Cole are amazing. Just fantastic.

However, let's say I wanted to expand my SEO knowledge. If I picked up a few more methods would they contradict each other in a negative way using the various methods?

I see there are a few recent ones that are quite popular. That being the case, I'm looking to augment my knowledge but I don't want to do so if they will cause conflict with getting the Google Places pages ranking as well as the site's organic listing.

Again, I feel Lee's are complete. But now I'm thinking I could be "unstoppable" for local clients with the expanded knowledge from other methods.

Would it be wrong to confuse methods with each other and use them in concert with each other for those of you familiar with the recent WSO's on the matter?

The thing with WSO's is that you aren't always getting pure facts. Sometimes you will be getting the authors opinion and strategy which may or may not work for you, it is hard to tell. I have released one on SEO in general, not really specifically for local but there is a lot of good information in there for just organic ranking and traffic building.

Some things you will need to have discernment with and decide what is best for you to do. You shouldn't take any information as fact, without testing it out.

For the most part, information is going to be the same, or at least SHOULD be the same if they know their stuff. Purchasing multiple WSOs on the same topic could be beneficial to learn each authors own tips and strategies. Perhaps utilizing the best of both can really help you dominate!

I highly recommend reading SEO Blog | SEOmoz Blog Featuring Search Engine Marketing Tactics & Strategies for all your SEO questions. It's free and very accurate. I personally wouldn't pursue many WSOs.

Hi Nathan, just joined the forum today, but I've been doing this since 2003. There are so many methods of getting your client's sites to the top. I will tell you a few that have worked from my experience, not from regurgitating forum posts. Here you go:

    1) For a long term strategy, create websites on different c-class IP addresses and use plugins like Caffeinated Content to populate them with lots of content. Schedule the content to drip in over time. Go to fiverr and get social bookmarks and backlinks over time. Once these sites get some PR, you can use them as link sources. Again, this is long term.

    2) Create a YouTube video channel for each niche that you intend to service. Upload short videos that you create in Windows Movie Maker to the account. Again, go to fiverr and get subscribers and friends. Do this over time, not all in one shot. You can also create short videos for your clients (30 secs.) and upload them. If they get customers from them, then UPSELL $$. Anyway, over time your YouTube channel can become PR5!! That means mondo link juice for links placed there.

    3) Content creation and distribution. GO LOCAL with the content. Write or outsource content that covers all the local towns and cities near your client's business. Distribute that content using articlemarketer or and equivalent service.

That should be enough to do it in addition to other methods like links from free directory sites (citysearch, whatever).

I hope that answers the question you asked

Ya I don't think there would ever be a WSO out there that is 100% accurate and pertains exactly to your situation. What you have to do is get what you can out of it and make it work for you. Even if there is one helpful tip you get out of it it will be worth the $7 or $9 you paid for it.

IMSince2003 has it right too. Go local with your SEO work. Remember it's local seo so mention your main town and surrounding towns as well. Google will eat that stuff up. Plus, if you check "related searches" in Google for a local keyword phrase they will also ALWAYS have your keyword with others towns instead. Do you know what I mean?

Hey Sean - Yeah I'm starting to get it more and understand that it's not as intimidating as I thought it would be. In fact, with the knowledge we have here it seems like a lot of businesses just aren't doing it.

I need to keep reminding myself that just because we do it doesn't mean they do. So I'm starting to get more confidence knowing I'll truly be able to garner results for someone's business and their ranking.

BUT, I gotta do it right. And that's what I'm working on.

Ya that's exactly it. Sometimes its hard to go on the assumption that they don't know the first thing about SEO or any kind of online marketing. Then again, we probably don't know the first thing about their business either.

One thing they do know is MONEY. If you can talk about how what you will do will make them more money, then you could start closing sales left and right.

Sometimes it is important to talk technique about SEO for a short periods of time to reiterate to the prospect you know what you are talking about, but after that you really have to "dumb" down and talk ROI.
