Went from #1 in Google Places to ahead of Google Places...

I have a client that was ranked #1 in the SERP for all of their local keywords. That #1 ranking happened to be the first listing in Google Places. Now, with the latest update, they have moved ahead of the Google Places listings. They are still #1, but no longer listed in Google Places for almost all of their keywords.

Has anyone else seen anything like this recently? The only thing I can find them in Google places for is if I search for their niche + exact town.

Did Google Places reduce the area for which a listing will show up in it?

They used to show up if you searched niche + county or niche + just about any local town.

Thanks.

I've experienced the same... ranking a business that is 40 miles outside of Seattle "on the map".

Either they reduced the radius, or added in more competition (they buy business info), or possibly both.

But yes, in the last 3 weeks I've noticed the same.

    This doesn't relate 100%, BUT.

While we're on the subject of the odd things that Google does.

I was recently scouting out a potential business that was running adwords for their business but their Google Places and main site were on page 1 million.

Anyways, I'd made the search a few times to collect information for the proposal.

There PPC ad was always in the top slot for the ads - but, after a while that stopped being the case, but, everytime the ad wasn't listed in top spot they put their Google Places listing around "D" spot on the first page.

Everytime the ad was there, Google Places listing went back into the archives...

Have you guys ever seen this before? Could it be a sign of good faith when you're paying for too much for your PPC ad, they give you a break and give you some free traffic opportunities?

Yes, when Google Boost first came out, they had a coupon/tag feature as well. I slapped one on all my clients' pages and they all went up.

However, I would never be as brash as to claim this observation, considering it goes against the episcopacy of what Google claims to be.

Hummm Interesting. All my clients listings stayed strong on Top A, B or C not much of a change after the update. In the other hand a few on my personal sites lost a few spots on regular organic results. Working right now to get them back up.

i don't even pay too much attention on their changes anymore. my job is to bring my clients more business so i rank them organically + google places.

you never know when google will decide to join it together or split it so i just prepare myself for it. at the end of the day, i liked it when it was seperated since i n rank twice on the front page.
