Analyzing Local SEO Competition

Hey,

One question: how do you analyze the local SEO competition for your clients' keywords to appear first page in the Google Places listings?

Do you use the same principles as in general SEO -- number of backlinks, etc. for each competitor's website -- or some other methods as well?

I know that citations and reviews are important in getting a high listing in Google Places, but since the new update, Google doesn't show 3rd party reviews anymore.

Should I type each competitor's name in Google and find their citations and reviews and count them manually? I just want to know if there's a way to quickly analyze the local seo competition.

    Besides backlinks and all the normal SEO stuff, take a look here:

    The more stuff they're doing right, the harder it will be to beat them. Stuff like:

    On-google reviews
    distance from city center
    place name in URL
    place type in url
    place name in header tags
    local phone number on every page
    NAP on every page
    semantic markup
    Places page completion

    etc. You'll get a lot more info from that page I linked to, but those are some good starting points to look at.

      Yup that pretty much covers everything you need to look at. I also like to see if my top competitors have profiles on the major local directories and how well optimized those are too.

        A great tip for this is to simply google the business phone number. This will bring up all those citations you're looking for so you can see how many there are and how well they're optimized.
