UK Marketers - Gumtree poor source for clients?

I've been playing around with gumtree recently for client leads. I'm finding the responses I'm getting are basically wanting various online marketing done for next to nothing. Had a 50 minute chat with a guy about setting up a opt-in page on his website, setting up his email campaign, helping him import leads and then running it once a week for him. How much was his budget? £20 a month.
Anyone had better experiences than me with gumtree or is it just because it's free/cheap to post??

I almost tried gumtree, but figured it'd be similar to craigslist where everyone's looking for a bargin/work done next to nothing.

I recommend just get out there & cold call a few businesses, setup meetings & tell them about your services, not only will it probably be more effective, but you'll get taken seriously & people will be prepared to spend real money on what they want.

Thanks. I already do well off linkedin for clients but just thought I'd try gumtree as another source of leads.

If he has only £20 a month to spend he is probably running an unprofitable business. There are two options:

    1. Find profitable businesses using other methods and target those.

    2. Make the unprofitable business, profitable, through good marketing, although this may not work if he has a poor product, which could well be the case!

He's turning over £500 a month it transpires so no not very profitable at the moment. He offered me a share of future revenues if the first month went well but that would only work if I considerably built his business and that isn't worth my time or effort tbh.

Well gummtree could be a good source of traffic. Also it can bring clients but you will spend a lot of time cleaning the bad leads from the good ones just as craigslist.

used to pick up easy work through the ukbusiness forum - have to pay though but the businesses are a little bigger and I have made more out of them then they did me.

Some serious time wasters in there so be careful!

    Good luck
