How far geographically do you advertise?

Hello

Whilst looking to start assisting local companies with seo, I came across this forum, specifically this section which I think is terrific

I am from the UK and in my county we have a population of around 800,000

Only three towns in my county have a population over 100,000

Did you start of by concentrating on one city and targetting multiple proffessions or one proffession but spanning a wider area?

Thanks everyone

Depends on what your trying to sell I would imagine. ie. If you're trying to sell a physical product, you might advertise only as far as you're willing to deliver
If your advertising a web-based service (for instance) your advertising could be far reaching.

      Thanks

It would be Google Places and SEO where required

Ideally, be able to travel to each client if needed but that could limit how many clients in one proffesion due to the lack of towns in my immediate area

      Thanks Guy

      Interesting

I am very happy to drive an hour to visit a client when I have a good chance of converting

What i did not want to do is work hard locally, then speak to people elsewhere and fine spanning the reach was more profitable

      Thanks very much!

Hi Mr Jibbles - I think we have a few more people than that over here but in answer to your question:

I started local marketing around 5 years ago and now I never really go out locally - infact I have very few clients right on my door step at all, most are at least 1 hour drive away

Instead I use the internet to find people and offer my services to them that way. Its quicker and means I do not have to compete with local rates which in my case is pretty low as I live in Devon (a summer retreat more than a thriving city)

Advertising locally is still of course a good way to get work, i'm not suggesting it is not- I just find that it's way more easier, quicker and more profiterable to find and attract clients online

your welcome, and I wish you the best of luck.

I appreciate it's hard just starting out in this industry now if you live in a small City like mine

One thing I will say is be super careful when it comes to the amount of time you spend on a prospect when educating or 'stroking' them.

Sometimes if they only want to spend around £500 you need to get it all turned around in a day or two and thats from meeting them to completing work load and grabbing the sign off.

You need to find out their budget and what they want online quickly

Then agree and provide a great service quickly if you want to survive long term.

    Good luck!

      Thanks Guy

One thing i was looking at was recurring income as I have seen it mentioned here to keep GP , in place

Looking at the places even for dentists, there are so many that are not even claimed or they are, have no reviews so don't think I can justify the monthly fee to them

But... at least it means i can concentrate on getting my name out there and charge a one off fee and know whats what

      Thanks again

Concentrating on one city and targetting multiple proffessions. This is what i do. Knock em out one city at a time, then turn these new clients into recurring clients by offering more services down the line.

It depends on what you would like to do. Either way can and will work as long as you get to work!

I personally will target anyone, in any place. There are a lot of cities and a lot of states with a lot of businesses that can benefit from my services. Why limit myself to one?
