Need help with local keyword search volume

What is an accurate way to check the search volume for local keywords?

How do I use a highly competitive keyword in my city and still maintain decent search volume?

For example I want to use the keyword "home loans". The Google Traffic Estimator says that for my city I can expect 18.7 clicks per day. So from some articles I have read if I multiply that number by 10 then I would get the daily search volume of let's say 180 and then times 30 days would equal 5400 searches per month.
Since "homes loans" is highly competitive and would take years to rank for I would think that "home loans my city" or "my city home loans" would be best. Well when I enter these terms in the Traffic Estimator the daily clicks drops down to 1.89 which sucks.

  • IMO local keyword research is not worth the effort and I NEVER do it.

What I recommend is to simply research the national KW volume. So for example you want to know how cosmetic dentistry, family dentistry, teeth whitening and Dental implants compare. Pick your best KW variations and use those just realizing if it's a big city it will get more searches than a small city.

Keep in mind if you are doing Google Places or want to rank in blended you also need to search Google for city keyword and keyword city to see if G even shows local for that kw combo.

Also keep in mind in your GP categories the keywords need to meet the "IS NOT DOES" rule. Google is starting to suspend listings that violate it.
