Is it a good way to market & if so what do you market using direct mailing

    Up until now, I've relied totally on cold calling and had great success, I am going to do my first ever direct mail campaign on Monday.

    From what I've read I can guess there will be more than a few responses telling you that yes, direct mail does work.

    You do have to go about it the right way though and be consistent. Don't send out a small mailshot then deem it a waste of time if you don't get results.

    Try a more than one approach at a time, split test, see what happens and hone your efforts to get the best results for your time

    I've done a few pieces and we've made a positive ROI. I wouldn't consider it a success, only because I'd like more responses, but still, the ROI from the mailings still result in more money than the actual mailings.

    I think it really depends on the demographic or niche you are going after with the mail order campaign. There are some industries that seem to rely a lot heavier on it than others for some reason. I would say be as creative as possible to get people to pay attention.

      Unless your lucky enough to have the right product at the right time, there is no way mail-shots justify the outlay. I know loads who have tried it (including myself) and wished they'd not.

      With so many marketing opportunities online I can't understand why anyone would want to incur the high outlay of offline marketing with mail-shots.

    Yeah there are better ways to mail but with everything it all depends on the niche.

      The only way to make sure that your Direct Mail marketing campaign is going to be a success is if you handwrite the envelopes and return address. Truly it's better if you don't have a return address on the envelope at all as it will peak the consumers interest that much more, but if you're trying to keep track of return mail you'll need to put it on there. While this can be a tedious task, there are hundreds of companies on the market that you can hire to do these things for you, me being one of them.       It doesn't work? lol.... you don't know how to do it... but it definitely works, why else would big companies still sent you all that crap?

      Let me give you one huge tip that really works for me getting new clients...

      Personalize your mailing.

      I use postcards to sell my mobile service, what i do is i search for 100 businesses that don't have a mobile site, i create a demo site for them, takes me about 10 minutes per site (yes it means you have to work or outsource) then i create a postcard with 2 mobile emulators screen-shots one with their normal site and one with their new site.

      Under the emulators i place a personalized URL with the business name in it and in the header i also ad the business name.

      I have a conversion of 10%/15% and 25% to 30% after the followup call, i hear a lot of business owners telling me what a great way to market your service.

      I sell my mobile sites for €149- which is really cheap but i do get a lot of up-sells for other stuff...

      Think outside the box and target your prospects with laser precision instead of carpet bombing businesses with huge mailings... because that type of mailing has a poor conversion..

        Direct mail is just a delivery vehicle. It's more important what your marketing message is... and who, and how carefully, you have targeted the list of recipients.

        As a delivery method, direct mail offers specific characteristics that can be beneficial, if you know how they match your intended audience. Expectations matching interest. Your offer is always key. If the message doesn't ring their chimes, it doesn't matter how you deliver it.

        The latest statisitics show the direct marketing industry is down a bit in 2010... a ball park figure around $3.2 billion. That's consumer and b2b and a total industry figure. But that's no small potatoes for a marketing medium.

        Of course, we're talking B2B here in this forum... and in the USA, businesses from large to small still use direct mail for new customer acquisition, customer retention and engagement, etcetera, etcetera.

        The question here is how B2B direct mail might help an offline marketer, so the answer depends on your business model. Most offline models I'm familiar with, can certainly use direct mail successfully... both alone and in conjunction with phone call followups.

        Dave Zegers above, laid out his direct mail marketing for mobile websites... I have several people following that model very successfully. It works very well if you target the right audience. And please notice that Dave is willing to put in the effort to create those emulator landing pages. Those are golden with this product pitch since it resonates both a positive and negative tone. "Wow, that's cool." And fear of loss... "Oh crap, my competition is going to have this soon, I don't want to be left out."

        Dave is also maximizing the benefit of his direct mail investment... by working a back-end profit funnel. In fact, this is the way to attain a very, very large ROI on that initial investment. He's looking at it properly... to the LCV(lifetime customer value). I wouldn't be at all surprised if he finds a total ROI of 100 to 1 or higher on his initial spend. Even spending $1 and get $20 back in total revenue is a bargain in lead generation methods.

        Match the right offline business model with proper direct mail strategy and you have a winner. Stick with proven winners for a product or service that will lead to back-end profits with recurring monthly income and upsells

        Don't attempt to sell with direct mail. I would recommend focusing direct mail and phone toward a lead generation stategy. Using targeting methods lowers the numbers, the dollar costs, and increases conversion and ROI. Where targeting criteria are not known then direct mail can be a great tool in filtering a shaky target list down to the market-qualified leads.

        Direct mail costs can be dramatically lowered by doing the proper segmenting and profiling to fit your model. That's what marketing really is. The difference is mailing 1000 businesses from a directory while hoping and praying. Or mailing a specific personalized message to 200 businesses that are already predisposed to be interested in your message. That's an 80% reduction right there. And this leads to much less time and effort on followups and certainly improves conversion ratios.

        Finally, do not ignore testing. You can do small mailings to split test the offer and headlines, the critical elements. Never roll out a large campaign until you have some numbers from testing.

        I recommend you look at direct mail as a sharp tool that can fit into your marketing toolbox. Done correctly it rarely fails to deliver a very good ROI. But I always keep my eye on other methods. We find great success is combining strategies. PostCard/Phone Call. Email/Phone Call. Call/Send Fax. Priority Mail/Phone call.

          It looks like Troi Mailing Services (troimail.com) is a direct mailing service, and they also do email and fax marketing.
          Although outsourcing your marketing initiatives, whether direct mail or email, might have its advantages, it can often cost more than it would for you to do in-house. (Of course, you'll have to call Troi Mailing for a quote on their services.) Many small business owners use low-cost email marketing services to send out email blasts, and they are pretty easy to use.
          Also, some online printing services that can print marketing materials also offer a direct mailing service for an extra fee. As far as fax marketing, I would definitely stay away from it, as you could be blacklisted for sending junk faxes.

    I used to use direct mail to a specific demographic, on occasion, before the 'net; and got little response for my investment.

    The only reason I might use it now would be to drive traffic to my website. But probably not.
