QR Code Marketing Question

5 replies
Im about to approach a potential client about QR Code marketing. It's regarding a QR Code that leads to their company app. I know they would be able to track the scans but is there anyway to track how many scans convert into actual app downloads? I'm not sure if there is a way on the QR Code tracking side but what about the AppStore dashboard? Does it show the app creators how each person who downloaded the app got there?

::EDIT::

Also, is there a way to create a single QR Code that links to the company's App in both iPhone and Droid app stores? IE: One guy has an iPhone and the other has Droid. They both scan the same qr code which leads them both to the company's app on their different phones.

      Both applications should read a single QR Code and get the same info IF both applications have QR Code readers.

      If you require different info for example sending someone to a different website you would probably need two QR Codes.

      Not sure if this helps you.

      Hm also you can put info in a QR code that creates the text details of each website eg www.a domain.com and www.anotherdoamin.com but you would only initially be able to read the two lots of information together and not be sent to them directly.

    In order to track conversions you'd need to be able to install a pixel that "fires" when a visitor reaches the conversion page.

    So unless you have access to the iTunes page (which I dont believe allows the installation of codes--and probably the same goes with Android) I'm going to guess no to seeing actual conversions.

    Also the only way I could see a QR that links to both stores would be to have the QR code go to a webpage that has a script that determines what web browser is being used (i.e. iPhones use Safari) and then have redirect script based on that browser to the appropriate link.

    An expensive (i.e. custom programming required) solution for a QR code which I think you might have trouble convincing a client to pay for.

    Just keep it simple!

    I don't think there is a way to track actual app downloads from the QR Code, you probably will have to just use the number of scans and then look at total downloads and make some assumptions to make an educated guess.

    I actually think this might be possible. I have never done this before, so I'm not sure it would work, but here is how I would try to go about it.

    Set up the QR Code to go to a certain webpage. You will want to setup some .htaccess rules that will automatically forward to another website, which in this case will be the app download page.

    So any Android device that goes to the webpage linked to from the QR Code will be recognized as an Android device and then automatically forwarded to the Marketplace to download the app. Same goes for iPhones. The .htaccess file will identify the device as an iPhone and then you can set up a forward to go to the iTunes store to download the app.

    As for the specific programming to use in the .htaccess file, I am not sure. It will probably take a lot of trial and error to get it right, but I'm pretty sure it can be done. You might want to put up a job description on eLance and get some bids for it to see how much it will cost. If there is somebody out there who has done this before, it actually shouldn't take that long.

    I hope this helps!
