Any suggestions for lead generation?

I run a local web design and development business. We currently are running a special for small businesses, and I'm trying to figure out whether I should pay someone else to generate leads for me or try cold calling myself.

I do not like talking on the phone to anyone (I tend to have trouble getting my point across) - and I think they probably pick up on this.
I've come up with a script, but wonder if there are alternatives that will generate better results.

I've just talked to a rep at CallboxInc.com, who said they can provide local leads - not sure on details or pricing yet though.
Has anyone had any experience with them, or other similar lead generation companies?

Or do you think I'll be better off cold-calling on my own?

I've known companies that have worked with Callbox that have achieved promising results from their cold calling services. Some of which are web design companies themselves. The main advantage of outsourcing to professionals is they already have an up-to-date database that they can use for your campaign. Once you state the necessary specifics for your target market and some other information required for your cold calling campaign, you can already kick off your lead generation campaign.

Third party services are also good since they are already professionals at what they do. If you don't like or have trouble getting your point across with their rep through the phone, you can tell them to contact you through your e-mail. Maybe that will help

Other than this, you can actually cold call prospects by yourself. If you have your own database to start with then you can actually start with the cold calling. But, if you have trouble getting your word across through the telephone while talking to a rep, then I'm surmising that you may have trouble getting the word across to your prospects. If this is the case, I suggest with the talking more with the call center to help you on this.

Even if cold calng is not your thing I would suggest doing at least 40 hours of calls yourself. This will give you a lot of data should you decide to outsource your calls. For instance
    A) how many calls an hour is reasonable with your script?
    B) what is avg number of appts you can get per x calls?
    C) are there services your local market needs that you may be missing with
out hearing reasons why not interested?
    Etc.
This will help you to evaluate and set expectations for a 3rd party and be able to tell fairly quickly if they are doing a good job.

Great, thanks for the replies. I've called about 6 lead generation companies, the impression I got is that web design is quite a hard thing to sell.. They're all fully booked, but waiting for responses with quotes for the start of 2012.

They suggested I work out an angle which will set myself apart - so have a few ideas.

I'm going to try cold calling myself tomorrow, working on a script tonight.
I think once I get one or two, I should be a bit more comfortable with it. I'll let you all know how it goes.

You can't beat showing up at their door to talk to them. This is what I do to drum up business for web site design.

    1. Go through local Google maps listings for different niches in my town and look at the bad web site templates

    2. Note down the address

    3. Take a day out to go and visit those types of businesses that have business premises that you could visit during working hours.

This generates me more business in a day than five days of cold calling. Everyone and his dog cold calls, not many people actually take the time out to go and visit a business.

I find that local business men would rather know you are local and at the end of a phone if they need you.
