WP mobile site plugin question

What is the best WordPress mobile site plugin to use? I see that there are quite a few to choose from and my preference would be to use a free plugin.

Any advice is welcome.

what exactly are you trying to do? there are a few mobile plugins for WP but they offer different features and functionality... some are more geared towards making mobile friendly blogs, then there are some that try to make mobile friendly business orientated sites...

however there are very few in my opinion that represent all aspects of mobile web development that are both easy to use and functional and also offer good validation so as to give the best mobile experience to the broadest range of your mobile visitors...

what type of wordpress site do you? is it a blog or an actual website for business?

        Hi there,

I have built quite a few WordPress powered sites. Originally I used plugins - Then I tried one of the all in one themes - BusinessPress.
Finally I settled for using a stand alone script as I found that it would work with any theme or plugin, and was not affected by any other plugin or custom coding in the wp theme.
I can see why one might want to feed their blog into the mobile site, but I think that a mobile site is a completely different animal, and until WordPress hard code a mobile option into the script, then I shall continue to do it that way.

Of the Free plugins in the repository three look good and I have tried them

        Alex King's /wordpress-mobile-edition

        James Pearce's /wordpress-mobile-pack

        and WebSitize's /wp-mobile-detector

I have also tried Wapple Architect - Very Good but complicated to configure

For really nice stand alone templates try Activeden

        hope that helps,
        j

P.S. I have also tried a few of the paid variety with varying degrees of success - but a script for $6 from Activeden is cheaper and better value

There are quite a few Mobile Plug-Ins for WordPress, I have found that WP Touch Pro to be the most useful. However, I have moved off the plugins, as they have limitations and often require more tweaking than I care for. I have a WSO in development and I have to tell you that based on my research & conclusions you are going to have greater success in one of two directions, and in both directions you will build your mobile site independent of the WP Site. Here is why, Converting a WP Site, or any other independent site, into mobile will always be a support chaser for you. You will continually make changes to the WP Site for the clients promotions and when you do you will end up making adjustments so the mobile version so they place nice together. Since you are going to be faced with these adjustments, you may as well have the mobile site independent. Keep them separate!

There are several mobile platforms that you can get a resellers (white label) account with. This is the best solution. Just don't get a service that converts content from the WP Site. You can get a re-seller's account that builds the site from scratch and most of these platforms have all the widgets you will need for promotions and active content. They'll have QR Codes, Coupon Generators, Push marketing with SMS, and a bunch of other promotional options.

Some of them charge by the number of impressions, but most just charge you a flat fee for unlimited clients. I currently pay about $9 to $14 a month per client and charge from $100 to $700 a month to the client depending on impressions, options, and veracity of competition. The greater the competition, the more Mobile SEO you must do.

As well, if your hosting for the WP Sites is on Apache Servers, you will need the Apache .htaccess file that houses the instructions for all of the latest advantages of the 5,000 plus mobile phones on the market to function correctly using the latest WAP 2.0 instructions.

Jamie is right, WP hasn't made mobile a priority yet. I truly don't understand why. I can only guess that the typical contributing developers to WP see that they need to get their own products to market before they develop something for free to a developing industry like WP users who really don't like to pay for things unless they can't find it for free. You see this a lot in the FanPage stuff. There are handful of FanPage plugins, but the only ones that are truly worth it (only a couple of them) you really need to upgrade to the paid versions to get what you want by way of ease of use and functionality.

Search the platform providers for mobile re-seller's accounts and find the one that you can use a sub-doman like m.yoursite.com on and build the mobile site from scratch. Don't fall into the trap of ".mobi". Buy the mobi domain to secure it for future use, but use the m.yoursite.com for the current mobile platform because the big G will give you more love that way. There are a number of Matt Cuts articles and videos out there that confirm this.

Best answer, NONE of THEM. I have not seen all of them, but have seen quite a few of them. Code it, pay to have it Coded or sell something else.
