Google Places = ARRGGGHGHG!!

I have a client who is a house painter (among other things) in Clayton CA.

When I search Google for "house painting Clayton CA" I see 10 Google Places results -- but NONE of them are located in Clayton!

The "A" listing has zero reviews and doesn't appear to be well optimized, so it makes me wonder why it got the top spot (maybe great citations, but I doubt it -- I didn't check.)

What really drives me mad is that my client's Google Places listing didn't come up at all, even though he has 4 great reviews.

His listing is here. (I have not touched it yet; he set this up himself.) When I did a search for the same phrase last week, his listing came up in the "A" spot and only 2 other listings showed.

Now his listing has apparently vanished?

"Arrrggghghg!"

Can someone else please search on the phrase "house painting Clayton CA" and tell me if you get the same ridiculous results I did?

How could so-so listings that are not even located in the city I'm searching outrank good listings that are?

GP can be so frustrating with the constant algorithm changes, one day they love you the next they hate you. Did the search for you and this is what I got, boy these forum pages are golden!

I searched for the three categories that are listed in your client's GPlaces page, construction clayton ca, deck builder clayton ca, and bathroom remodeling clayton ca, and your client's GPlaces page came up in the A spot for all three.

However, house painting clayton ca did not bring up your client's Gplaces page. It seems to me that if you want his GPlaces page to show up at the top for house painting, the key might be to put house painting in his GPlaces page as the main category.

Thanks Karen! Weird that it showed up for me last week... but then again, maybe my rememberer isn't accurate about the keyword phrase I used when I did my search.

What you said about his listing makes sense.

Still scratching my head about zero Clayton results showing during my search... maybe none of the painting contractors in Clayton have "house painting" on their GP listings, either!

I'm glad the GP listing came up in the A spot for your 3 searches!

You made me feel a lot better -- thanks again!

Since you're using Chrome already, just click the settings icon and then "new incognito window." This will let you browse without cookies and cache crapping up your google search results.

Also pay attention to the guy above me who said to make sure you tweak the FROM location when you Google the dude.

Biggest problem you have is little to no optimization for the keyword "house painting". Yes your client has a page that list the term 3 or 4 times but that just isn't enough. Also the GP page does not have a category of house painting. I did a search for Bathroom Remodeler Clayton Ca and guess who is in the A spot. Do some SEO and you should be good to go.
