How Do You Work with Your Offline Clients to Claim Business Profiles [Citations, etc].

So I've been working with my local client here who happens to be a dentist. Last month, I received all his videos, images, etc., did some on-site optimization for his site, updated his entry in Demand Force, launched two exact match domain sites (of which one should be done this week), created and launched two videos and have started creating backlinks this week.

Now comes the fun stuff: creating citations and claiming these business profiles for him. I upgraded my WhiteSpark account and already I can see the sources of the top ranking local dentists, so that is pretty cool. Obviously my next step is to submit my client's business info to these directories/blogs/forums, whatever they happen to be.

However, while researching topic of citations, I came across a list of general sites where I should begin business submissions:

1. InsiderPages
2. Merchant Circle
3. SuperPages
4. Yelp
5. Yahoo
6. Bing
7. Kudzu
8. Botw
9. CitySearch
10. HotFrog
11. Manta
12. Judy's book

Looks good, right? Now I'm discovering to claim these business profiles, my client needs to answer a phone call. I discovered this while trying to do so with Yelp. I"m sure the others work the same way.

My first set of questions: how do you do this with your client? Do you tell them to set aside a few minutes on a particular day? Or that you'll be doing this on random days during their business hours and to train the staff to pass such calls onto him?

So, second set of questions: why do we need to claim these business profiles? Is it so that no one else does and abuses the account? Or also so that you can leave replies to any negative reviews?

Lastly, I see a couple of issues I'll be emailing my client with. For instance:

-Business open/close times
-Claiming business listings
-Categories/Keywords they are comfortable with other than general dentistry. (I'll include some examples ones)

I appreciate any help. I'm good with general website SEO but local (citations) are new to me. Thanks!

Hi, here is how I do it.
    1. Create a checklist upfront with the info that you need to get from the business.
    (common info the sites reguest)
    2. Determine which sites you have to verify by phone and do them on a certain day, let the business owner know they will recieve calls that day and to write down the code. (if they do not answer, I call them and tell them I am trying to verify the phone for them to answer)

you need to claim the sites for a few reason, 1. it helps their google places rank higer, 2. it get the business traffic for user searching the web for that service or product,

Thanks Jason. I guess I have to get off my lazy butt and see all the required info on these sites. Which can be a bit hard to do, as I don't know what it all requires until I can claim the listing. (Yelp seemed to stop).

Any tips? I know there are other people who do this so let's hear it
