Google Places, how to get to the top?

How do I improve my listing for Google Places? Even if people search for my keyword within my city I appear on the 2nd or 3rd page while others in further citys appear on the first page? I have 8 reviews on Google Reviews, I thought that would help boost my ranking? Any advice?

Listing is "Classic Jewelers Orange CA" or "Cash For Gold - Classic Jewelers" Thanks everyone.

I heard one of the ranking factors on Google Places is your listings on other sites such as Yell.com, Yelp, Hotfrog that sort of thing. It might be worth you adding your business to a few business listings sites, just make sure you use the exact same details that you've used on your Google Places listing.

Yeah, Google reviews do help the local Google Places ranking, as well as getting good local backlinks from related sites.

The ranking procedure is fairly similar to any normal link building SEO procedure. The only difference is you should also target local backlinks.

Why not reverse engineer the other Google Places competitions backlinks? They are in front of you because of them, see if you can get backlinks or even more ideas from these places.

Reviews are good... citations are great. The more directories with your business information the better. Most importantly, is your listing COMPLETE?

One google place is at 91% complete and the others at 88% percent. I can't figure out what else im missing in the listing. Everything is entered except for adding a video??

What do you mean by citations?

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it.

When I say complete, I mean MAX photos and Max videos too. Extra information, hours, description, radius of who you are targeting. I prefer listing it by city instead though.

Thanks I'll add more pictures and try to get a video. Never thought about doing a video but I'll find something on youtube. Or maybe pay someone on fiverr to yell my business name for 5 dollars lol

Before starting a new Google Places listing you always build the citations first. You want these available for Google to find when you do the Google Places page.

I don't see any citations on anyone elses google place listing? Are citations considering reviews from other websites such as yelp? Would buying backlinks boost my ranking? Thanks

It depends ... What listing is showing up on searching for your keyword. Is it a 7 pack listing or a blended one. Both follows a different algo.

The listing is a 7 pack of other local businesses which are in the same category. I'll appear but usually on the 3rd page.

Newbie on the forum here but am having a problem with a client's Google Places page as well. Got the page set up about a month ago, was ranking on Places for three key phrases and then - poof! Teardrops disappeared from all three and so has my client's smile. I have three results on the first page of organic results for their main key phrase, but they really want the Places results. I have more citations (they had 100 before I even started work and now have 190), more reviews, and a 100% complete Pages listing. Any thoughts on what happened? Thanks in advance.

Have them login to their Places pages as owner and see if there are any alerts for non-compliance?

That's been addressed and is why the organic rankings are completely satisfactory. It's just the Google Pages (local) results that are the problem.

There are going to be several factors that will help with a good ranking for your GP (Google Place). 1. Quality Listing 2. Reviews that customers would apply 3. local competition of you type of business 4. Other sites that also show your business. There are a lot more factors involved and just because you get these four right does not guarantee you will still be ranked high or even be in the top 20 pages of the map listing.

There is not "ONE" thing you can do to improve your ranking, it is based on many factors. Google must see your Places page as the most relevant to the search query. It is important that your website has your business data (Name, Address, Phone) and that it matches exactly what is found on your Places page. It is also important to have high value citations that exactly match your places page. I also would recommend that your Google Places page is Owner-Verified. Here is a good source for reference of the many contributing factors... Local Search Ranking Factors

and of course... The listing itself should be well optimized... description, categories photos, videos, etc...

    • Think of Google local rankings like a giant, extremely complicated puzzle. (2 separate algos with likely over 300 pieces).

Whoever has the largest number of the most important pieces in the right places wins and gets to rank on page 1. (For that particular keyword and city). If you are not well optimized and/or are missing lots of important puzzle pieces you can end up on page 5.

If you are in a competitive market, your competitors have likely been working for years to attain top rankings. Some of them are probably paying a marketing company every month to get them and keep them on top.

How well your Place page is optimized, how well your web site is optimized, how close you are to city center, how many trust points you have (ie. citations, reviews, etc.) and how many backlinks you have, are a few of the most important puzzle pieces that affect your ranking.

The info in the link below is really complicated and hard to understand, but is the most comprehensive document on how the local ranking algo works. Many of the local pros that are contributors have blogs that offer good optimization tips too.
