Did a talk at networking meeting and....

So this morning I had an opportunity to give a talk at one of the local networking groups I joined and I discussed QR Codes and how to really use them in your business.

My talk did 4 things for me.

1. I instantly became the marketing expert in the group.

2. I was able to sign most of them up to my email newsletter increasing my opt-in list.

3. One woman who owns a music studio (music lessons, voice lessons, etc.) wants me to come up with a marketing plan for her including building a new website, doing an adwords campaign, setting up Google places, and some other stuff to bring in more business.

4. I sort of got a couple of leads from a member who's a banker. She said she knows two businesses she works with that could use my service and took extra business cards and flyers from me. Ok, maybe they're not actual leads but it may turn into something.

I know I've said this before but I love being face to face with many businesses at one time and that's the best part about these networking groups. Tomorrow I'll be going to a Chamber of Commerce breakfast to meet even more business owners and "plant some more seeds".

Nice going, Mike. Out of curiosity, did you charge for the event, or did you do it free to generate leads?

    Cheers,

Hi Holly, he didn't host the event, he took part in a locally organized one.

Mike, that's great going, reminds me to look into doing that again, I only did this once solely to boost my offline consulting business and a piece of software I had developed.

I sold a few copies of the software immediately after speaking, and got 3 leads for ebook publishing consultations. Only one came solid, but it helped me grow my ebook publishing consulting into a big part of my system.

The success from that one event pushed me to further market both the software and publishing consulting even wider and that led me to my best, highest paying client to date, I'm his and his wife's ebook publishing consultant and his company's primary (hopefully soon to be only) ecommerce consultant.

Bottom line, speaking publicly at networking events seems to work well and don't be surprised as Mike said if you end up being the only real expert in your niche and from there become the top dog with little sweat.

There was another Internet consultant at this networking event but he was shy didn't want to toot his horn, I did the opposite as we were all asked to speak... this other Internet consultant ended up becoming one of my clients So, when you do go to networking events don't be afraid to actually speak especially if the opportunity is given to you to do so. Being shy doesn't help people get to know you and what you can do.

Thanks for the reminder Mike, will be looking into this more this year.

      Cheers

    Congrats Mike!

    That's awesome!

    It's a great formula folks...

    1) Share knowledge
    2) Become the expert because of it
    3) People know understand WHY they need X (and that YOU are the one to do it for them)
    4) Profit WHILE helping
    5) Your clients bring you more clients
    5) Goto #1 (optional simultaneous loop to #4)

    Congrats again Mike.

    All success,
    Gary

No, I did not charge for this. When you join a networking group, everyone usually gets to speak for a minute or two at the beginning to simply introduce themselves and explain what their business does.

Then every week, one person from the group gets to do some sort of talk or training. During our Christmas party, the leader asked if I would be willing to talk at the first meeting of the year. Of course I said yes.

But the key is not to turn your talk into a sales pitch. Just like with online marketing, you want to provide solid information and give various tips that will help their businesses. This does a couple of things.

      1. Shows that you're the expert and know what you're talking about.
      2. Shows the business owners how marketing involves actual WORK that they usually don't have time for and which is why they end up hiring you

I've actually been wanting to change that name for a while but didn't know I could do it. Then in a different thread I was called lazy simply because of my screen name. That's when I knew it was time to change it. Plus, if I decide to start offering services here, I think using my company name would look more professional anyway

I think this is the best way to get long term leads. I belong to several groups and have built some very strong relationships out of them. I am able to provide introductions for their services and they do the same. One suggestion I have is what to do when it's time to do your longer presentation don't spend 15 minutes pitching your services. I have done things like top 10 things to help with marketing local services. Things like that. There are thousands of great tips on this board you could use to put together a presentation. Then spend the last 2 minutes making your pitch. You will be adding a lot more value to people and show you know your stuff to potential clients or intros they may have.
