Questions About Local SEO. Any WSO Suggestions?

I have done some SEO for my local business and have gotten my business to rank #1 on google for a handful of keywords. The keywords i rank for though show - results on the Google Adwords Tool. I want to learn more about local SEO and how exactly it works.

Are their any good WSO on this?

Some of my questions are:

1. What kind of Google Adword Keyword Tool results do you look for before you target that keyword? (i was searching my city+a profession and most were showing no exact results)

2. How do you track how many leads the site is generating?

3. Do local businesses really pay to an existing website with just their phone number plugged in?

4. Any other tips?

Thanks for the help

    1. Sometimes with the Google Keyword Tool it is hard to tell because it does not show "accurate" numbers. I am sure you have heard of people saying the GKT showed 0 result but they still got traffic from certain terms. I use a few keyword tools and a lot of common sense. The biggest factor though is going to be the size of the city. The bigger, the more "exact terms" you are going to find. You just have to find a level of competition you are comfortable with.

    2. You could use a "code word" so when a potential customer is at the site it could say something like "make sure to mention the word "insert word" when calling". I have also heard of people buying cheap prepaid cell phones to give to their clients and post that number on the site for tracking.

    3. I say it's better to have several articles about the city + trade/service in general. When it ranks you can tell your potential client that you will post an article/ad/info, whatever the client wants at the top of the page or use the "sticky" option for WP. If they also have a site you can use info/images from there, or go the business and take some pics and video yourself if your close enough.

    4. When you have time search for city + dentist or plumber, or whatever of different large cities and you will find several examples.
