First, here's the research:

TV's next killer app: Weather – What's Next - CNN.com Blogs

WEATHER is the most popular thing people want to know. How about a morning weather update from your favorite breakfast place?

It's useful, DESIRED information. It keeps the restaurant (or store) top of mind. It's cheap. It can be done daily. It can include weather AND a daily special offer. Can be fun!

"Weather: Sunny, yeah! Eggs special, any way you like, $3.99"

"Weather: Rain, yuck. Glass of sunny orange juice .99 cents"

"Weather: Crappy. C'mon in, we're commiserating! All you can eat, $7.99"

"Weather: COLD. Free HOT coffee from 6 am to 9 am. C'mon by!"

At first I was wondering if it was one of those "leave the error in there deliberately to attract more viewers" things you were talking about.

Offline Warriors, Rick is very effective and original at copywriting, which translates to you as "Will Help You MAKE SALES If You Do As He Says."

Maybe I'm different, but honestly? I'd find it really annoying! Imagine a few days (and then a few weeks)...argh!
    Great creative thinking though!
Maybe a free weather app that was sponsored by advertising - but you can probably get free weather apps anyway (I wouldn't know, I don't do apps).

I think it is a good idea too. I think the weather would have to be a bit more detailed than good/bad etc... Severe weather alerts by zip code.

Another daily would be a traffic report. That could be a nice biz on its own where people plug in their start address and work address(nice marketing oppty) so they get traffic info to and from work. Some map sites have traffic info, not sure if that data can be tapped, or possibly a local tv/radio news station.

    Another daily people like, horoscopes.
    Or daily positive message/affirmation,
    or daily bible verse,
or daily the winning lottery numbers for state/national lotteries
    stock market alerts,
    sports scores
maybe your google search alerts could be texted for new hits
    daily joke
daily spanish(any foreign language) word to learn.
Daily fun events/things to do in particular city-popular on FB
    Daily guinness book record entry
daily cheapest gas price by zip or linked to GPS
daily national debt amount-this should be sent to every member of CONgress
best daily happy hour by zip or GPS
daily snow conditions for particular ski resort
    lottery jackpot size
    stock price alert by symbol
this day in history(what famous thing happened on this day)
    daily medication reminder

all this stuff would be easier to get pushed to you rather than look somethign up on smart phone or download and start an app. All they do is read the message or click on the link and then delete.

[with slightly evil grin] Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody anybody!

I think this could be a WSO in the making!

These ideas are really good, guys!

I just thought this one up but I'll be advising it as a test next week.

I think a daily SMS would get old after awhile.

I just created an app for my city that includes news, weather, sports, facebook, twitter, gas prices, dining, nightlife, etc. in one handy app. All of the information in the app is specific to my town. Its good for residents as well as people visiting.

I find myself using the app every day, esp. to check gas prices. the app contains "sponsored" listings, which is mainly affiliate links and CPA offers at this time, but I'll be going after local businesses to advertise after the number of downloads increases. I used rss builder to make the affiliate products look like articles.

another nice thing about an app is that you can send "push notifications" to users. So its basically like sending an SMS.

Check it out at http://www.grtoday.com Available for Android, and in a day or two the Apple store too.
