QR Codes - Their purpose for an offline business website

I have noticed on 2 websites I viewed today that they have a QR code block in the sidebar. Both websites were for small local businesses. What is the purpose for QR codes in this setting?

Thanks

    interesting question as if i am on my pc it is easier for me to click on a link and go to a site rather than get my phone, hope there is no reflection, get the qr code which will then open up in my phone, therefore i have to read the site on my phone rather than from the screen i was originally looking at

    to me looks like technology being used in the wrong setting!

      I'll venture a guess that they bought the QR codes from offline marketers and didn't quite know what to do with them.

      The QR could be useful - for example you may need the businesses address, map and phone number handy on your phone for when you got to an appointment.

      Think of the QR code as another piece of information on the site, rather than "technology". It gives the visitor options. Many will choose to just phone, email, print instead but it could be useful for some people.

      I went back to one of the websitesand clicked on the code block. It linked to the business facebook page.
      Still don't get it.

    One thought about why they have a QR code on a webite;

    If I were promoting offline businesses and was talking about a QR code, I suspect most people wouldn't have a clue what they are. So I would put one on my website to show prospective clients what one looks like.

    There are a lot of things that can be done with a QR code, but one idea might be to take the visitor to an online webinar as more presell to buying my service. They have already shown some interest by going to the site in the first place.

    It would need to be tested, but I'd put a headline above it to the effect of "Use your Smartphone QR Reader To Learn More" and of course, have a link below the QR code to also take them to the webinar for those without smartphones.

    I'm also not sure why they would do that.
    To me, a better application of a QR on the sidebar of a local business' website would be to link it to the business' phone number, or maybe pull up a map with locations.

    The purpose would be to allow the visitor to connect to the site's FB page on their mobile device since that is where a majority of social interaction occurs. Effective blending of desktop and mobile computing and not just having the latest technology/marketing for it own sake.

    QR codes also have the ability to generate mobile emails to send that can opt you in to a subscription. But I agree with the guys above. However, is a few lines of code that generate these guys, (if they have gender, LOL), and they look Kewl...
