Taking payment : sign to us or a company will be better?

Hi there,

Had done almost most of the pre-sell kits for my audiences.
But there's some questions that need you guys advice...

Will the customers won't made any payment if they made the payment via cheque to my personal name? (Since it's look like a one man team) or should I get a registered company?

I thought of registered a company but still send the cheque to my name since I do not intend to open a business account to save some costs..is it advisable to do this way?

Also anyone here have any recommendation people who are good in website audit? Someone who can fix the linking structure of the website.

Appreciate anyone can help. Thanks!

professional = have client write checks to your business name. Having them write it to you're name doesn't look professional at all.

Having to sign a check to a registered business is more professional (and offers more comfort to customer) versus just writing a check to some guys name.

I have to take some exception to the notion that writing a check to an individual is unprofessional. These days it's extremely common for people to have their own consultancy business and many firms recognize this.

My firm recognizes the value of individual consultants and view their professionalism in terms of the quality of their work, not who the check is made out to.

Most of this thinking about being perceived as unprofessional because we use our own name to represent our business is in our own heads.

By way of example, here is a list of few people who use their name as a corporate identity:

        Ford
        Dodge
        J.C. Penney
        Ralph Lauren
        Ben & Jerry
        Buick
        Chevrolet
        Chrysler
        Kroger....and the list goes on.

Take the exception but overall the general consensus among small business owners is that they want to make a payment to an entity not a person.

Additionally making a payment to an entity doesn't require additional tax compliance where as paying any one more then 600 dollars per year for anything requires additional tax compliance, which equals more paperwork.

You are right all those names became corporate entities but this isn't what the original issue was with the OP.

It wasn't should I open a company that bears my name, it was should I have people write checks to me personally to pay for business services.

Spark, do yourself and your clients a service and just go register a company as soon as possible.

Thanks for the advice. I can see that it's does look more professional when I am Registered as company instead of name plus I will definitely look and sound better if there's company on it with all the Docs that need to sign by the client and myself.
Hmmm...but thanks for all the info guys.

I would say get the business account sorted along with a registered business. Less tax in most cases and helps with peace of mind for the business owners you will be working with.

I s-corped earlier this year but for a decade before I did copywriting under my name as a side business. Nobody ever had a problem writing a check out to my name.

It shouldn't cost you anything to open a separate business account at your bank. All you need is a checking account. If your current bank tries to charge you simply tell them: "No thank you, I'll find another bank."
