Text Based info or video based website!!!!

I am in the process of setting up a Sales and Marketing website for start up/small to medium sized businesses. Basic site which will educate about Offline and Online on the aforementioned subject. This is with a view to longer term upselling of products and services including some websites,SEO and all the rest. (Yet to source the people for that).

Now my question is. Do I fill the website pages with text (which can be sometimes scare people off) or do I just go for full text or text which introduced the video clips?

I am guessing the simplest way is to do the text and then the video as the interaction is a little more personal. Also the clips could eventually turn into products!!!

Anyone any thoughts about what they prefer or what is theoretically know as the best method?

I know my personal view is to have the video but it may not be the best.

Thanks

    Why not both?

But I find your post odd in that you say you are building a website to "educate" small/mid-size businesses, but your first step is to ask, "how should I do it".....bit of a credibility gap there unless you've been doing it offline, have solid credentials, and are now moving it to an online environment.

Yes thank you I have credentials, 25 years in business credentials, including Professional Marketing qualifications. I can setup any business anywhere and make it work. But that has nothing to do with this. I wouldn't be developing it if I didn't know how to speak or sell concepts and get people to buy.

The question is based around a website and what is the view of people in the know who about websites. I am not a developer of websites nor am I an Internet Marketer.I would have thought an IM and a Developer may know what is, or has been best practice for people in the past with such websites.

Seen as this will be an offline/online service I thought it wise to ask on this section of the forum.

But yeah why not do both. Test the market and do as a real marketer should. Develop two websites and test the response. This for me will be going just a little to far as I wanted to get a feel for what warriors on here think not to go and do market research without asking this(market research). The thing is I would like some feedback first David not three words? Then to question ones credentials.

But I appreciate your valued input.

      Cheers

Actually it has everything to do with it.

I wasn't trying to be offensive, just realistic. The fact is that many people requesting information in a similar way do not have credentials.

I did ask if you had credentials and were transitioning to an online environment, in which case your request is perfectly understandable. I apoligize if my post seem mean spirited, it wasn't meant that way.

You'll find numerous SEO experts in this forum asking how to get more leads. I find that particulary ridiculous!

...by the way..."why not both?" is not only a valid bit of advice, it's truly the only measure of what you're trying to ascertain. Some people are visual learners and others prefer the written word. Do I really need more than 3 words? There is value in brevity!

I can not disagree, there can be value in brevity at times. Unlike your second reply which is substantiated and therefore has more value to me. I do like the fact that some people are visual learners and others prefer the written word. You see you have raised a point here that I can work with and has made me think a little harder. Most of my audience will be business which may support the video/audio side of things. Just a thought! Our posts could have gone in a totally different direction had you responded with that in the first instance.

I disagree that my credentials have anything to do with this. This forum is alive with people who have a place to learn, understand and progress, credentials or not. If you were willing to ask every poster their credentials then I think the free spirited communication on here would be no longer. If people are willing to learn, understand and progress then good luck to them. Credentials and credibility come with time, education and support.

I took your post as any professional would have. Hence the response.

Anyway enough of this nonsense and no harm done. We all learn from our mistakes.

J, just always remember that when you ask for an opinion they will come from all angles especially on a forum where most responders are invisible to you sitting on the other end of a data stream. Judging from your 25 years in business you no doubt realize that. Please let me say that I am not trying to do any finger wagging here. By the nature of my posts and threads I start, I also get wide responses. I realize they all have something that I can take away. This forum is a microcosm of the market place. Its a place to buy, sell, learn and test. ( Thanks WF!) This brings me to my point and my opinion.

Yes I think doing both is probably the best solution. You want to get, as they say, the most bang for your buck. All people learn, hear, see and think differently. As you know good marketing techniques try to bridge all of this or as much of it as possible at the same time.

That is what direct mail, which still works fine, tries to do also. The neat thing about a web page is, you can also engage the senses of hearing along with sight that includes motion. Once again proving the marketing power of a web site. Up until now the only practical way to take advantage of this marketing power was TV or radio. Both costly for the smaller enterprise.

Another process you would want apply to find the most effective solution to your query, would be testing. Try some different types of Video and text interactions and track results. Testing is one of the most overlooked procedures in building a successful and working web site. Test every little detail that you can and have time to. We all know that the best of anything has been tweaked and fine tuned over and over. (A short cut would be to use someone else's testing and the WF is a great place to ask as you are doing. Be sure you structure your question to get the specific answer you want and ask on the correct forum section.)

And yes of course this takes time and energy but despite what many IMers say to the contrary, there ain't no free lunch or push button solution. Ask those with these 1,2or 3 click wonders how long it took them to create their marketing miracle.

          IMHO...

P.S. Also realize that the posts we make are supposed to be in response to the OP who started the thread granted and I understand this. However for a forum format to be popular to many, keep in mind that other silent eyes are gleaning information too. Those posters that tend to be teachers at heart may expand on a reply more than the OP intended. I, like numerous others here on the WF love teaching and helping others, really. Purist among us however would disagree with me I'm sure. My wife does all the time.

Great reply Old Dog and thanks for the info.

I know the score as they say when it comes to opinions.

I just couldn't leave it at that cause it warranted a reply with respect to the credibility and credentials.

I didn't just want to reply "No and Yes" cause for me that would have been rude. I guess I just needed to reply for that reason. I am sure there is no ill feeling between me and David. Just two strong characters with views.

I do intend to use several forms of research to establish the best results.

Both with the website and the non website community.

Direct Mail is on the list as I am old school where that is concerned being IDM qualified. I didn't want to leave that one out

I think more info gathering on the site will be beneficial before getting the developers involved. I have seen a few already but really wanted an IM's view.

As for the silent eyes gleaning information, piece by piece they can help themselves or just ask.

            Good luck to everyone.

            Thanks again
