Google Places and Video Optimization

Hey guys,

I'm ranking a Google Places listing for one of my clients and also had a video created for them.

I'm of the understanding that adding a video to the listing via youtube and then geo-targeting it, will help with the optimization of the Places listing.

What if you were to focus on ranking the video? Does anybody know if this helps with a lil' extra oomph to the rankings?

    Hi James,
Interesting post. I am very focused on onsite video seo and ranking YT in Google results, but have been looking into using video to help with Places SEO. For a lot of reasons, I have not seen any data to support that embedding YouTube gives you any SEO value onsite (the main reason being is if YT embedding is allowed, you could embed any old 30million view video to try and get SEO value for the page out of it). However, your post has me thinking, if you use the same account for the Places and YT, maybe you could get something out of it since it shows you control the content. Is that what you read? Do you have a link you can point me to to learn more about how YT helps Places? I have not been able to find much about this with any conclusive results. I'd be happy to research this with you, it's something I am really interested in figuring out as well.

I didn't actually read it anywhere. I had a guy optimizing some of my Places listings and he always vouched for adding a video to the listing and geo-targeting it through Google.

I just added a video to one of the listings about a week ago and it definitely gave it a boost, and that was strictly geo-targeting, no other form of video optimization done.

Interesting indeed, I'll let you know how I fair with that particular listing.

    Thanks,

    James

I understand the concept but how do you actually geo-target the video?

      Thanks in advance, Eva

@wilder1047 - Yes, optimizing the videos has helped me in the past. Not a ton, but I have noticed movement

@Vikuna2009+ - Enter in the company's address when editing the video in the 'Date & Map' section on the video. Be sure to hit 'Search' so it finds the location

My understanding is that the more complete your Google Places listing is, the better. This means that having videos within your Google Places listing helps the ranking on Google Places.

It is very easy to put the video on You Tube and geo-target the video by using your keywords in the title and description area. Also, put a link to your site or your Google Places listing at the start and end of your description and also have the link on your video either as a caption or the last slide.

Videos like this for geo-targeted keywords rank well on Google. With longer-tail or less competitive keywords you can get page one rankings very quickly to impress your client.
