Why are you doing this?

This may seem like a very stupid question on the surface, and you've also probably heard the whole concept before.

But, have you ever asked yourself, why?

I'm sure the majority of you got into internet marketing for the freedom, to escape the rat race, to make some decent money, or maybe you got laid off and this is your only option.

How many of you are actually realizing those dreams, though?

The real question to ask yourself is why did you get into the offline world? Is it because it's the fastest way to make money? It's generally easier to get results for local markets?

I'm asking this because, I used to ask myself this and never seemed to 'get it'.. because I always thought I knew the answer, 'to help local businesses'.. but, deep down, it wasn't the real answer, the real answer was to make money and become free.

But, when this is your motive, business owners smell it, and that's why a lot of us have problems selling. We go in thinking "they'll see right through me".

If you go in there, 110% dedicated to THEIR success, you could care less about the rejection, it is literally THEIR loss, you're just trying to help them.

I was talking to a sales rep for an ISP today, and he said he would go door-to-door and have the door slammed in his face all the time, and after a while he thought you know what "Screw you" I'm here to save YOU money.. I know my service is superior and that you'll like it, so you're going to hear me out. And he would knock on the door again until the guy would listen to his spiel.

But, for me, I never really changed my mind set until I finally got a client ranked and generating business through MY efforts, it just felt like such a good deed, here I am, some guy working out of his house and I just increased this business owners bottom line by 50% in 3 months.

That's when it all changed, that's when I stopped caring so much about the money and realized it would follow my passion.

I know this post is going to be obvious to a lot of you, and also SEEM obvious to a lot aswell, but, if you're still having problems about selling, trust me, you still haven't 'got it' yet.

A lot of people say not to do anything for free, but if you just can't get in the right mind set and you've still never provided results to a client, just go do it for free, find a really uncompetitive market, one you can rank for in a few weeks.. and ask a business owner if you can rank them for free, just for a testimonial.

Once you get them results, you'll see what I'm talking about, the money takes a back seat when you see you've helped somebody out like this.

Hope this helps one of you guys out.

Thanks,

James

Lovely write-up James, thanks for that.
It's true. My motives started out like yours but that soon changed.
Money is the carrier, being able to see my little girl in ballet class every friday the goal.

That goal entails everything, money, freedom, helping others. But it comes down to that one thing.
    Seeing her dance every friday.

That's what keeps me going. And I know it will happen

Good luck in your business! I can sense you're on the right path!

I kind of agree with you.. even though im always against FREE.. and I'm against DEALS. LOL.

MY story would probably inspire a lot of people, but at the same time I don't want to give people false hope because it isn't as easy as people make it sound and it really does take drive, motivation and good work ethic.

I thought it would be nice to have the freedom of working for myself, the money potential, and just something I can directly see results of building my own business. I have accomplished many things, and I like the challenges that arise.

What it really comes down to though is helping people. There have been a few clients of mine, that I wasn't satisfied with the results given to them. I felt bad about it, and think about it and wonder why I'm even helping them because in my eyes I didn't think I was helping much. In their eyes they saw me as a life saver though.

I think the real key to success is helping people. Doesn't mean helping people for free of course lol, but if you really enjoy what you do and you like to see your efforts helping another business succeed, then it is a wonderful field to be in.

It is kind of a played out phrase. Why get into offline marketing? To help people. That really isn't the main focus when you want to get in. You get sucked into the freedom, financially and time wise, or at least the theory of it. Something that definitely seems obvious and many people preach it, but it is also something that you need to really experience the "clicking moment" to really understand and be able to say you're in this to help people.

      Great post.

You don't necessarily have to work free just have a serious focus on making your clients real sales and profits and stay comitted to that even if it means doing more work for a client than you initially intended to it (this is not science...not every strategy works first time and sometimes you need to get creative).

If everyone was genuinely trying to be of service to businesses they talk to they'd find it a whole lot easier to get hired and they'd find their lives a whole lot more fulfilling.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Good post James. One thing I do now is make sure I follow up with all my clients at least once a month and if I see something that I think to myself, hey, that would help Joe down at the dealership, I send it his way for free. I'm sure my clients think I'm nuts and sometimes I think that myself but I do believe that we get in life what we give and I thank the universe each day for the opportunity to help others the way I have been helped. Online marketing has helped pay my bills for about a year and a half now and I want to pass that on to my clients.

Btw, I think this is the reason call centers in other countries just do not do well in the states and canada. They have NOTHING invested in the people they are trying to sell and virtually no reality of how their company's products can benefit me. In other words, there is no understanding being created between the salesperson and person being sold that I have with my clients.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

Haha I knew there would be some objection to my free concept.

I've personally never done anything for free, but, if people are having real problems landing clients, I think this would be a good way for them to understand how much they're looking to help businesses.

And really, I should also mention this, if after you've helped a business increase their revenue and you're still not overly excited or really care, then I don't really think this business model is for you unfortunately.

    Thanks,

    James

My "Why" is to transform the world's perception of all salespeople as slimy tricksters who will say and do anything to get an order...into well-compensated, trusted advisors.

For those truly interested in Why, watch this video, which I give to all my clients:

So true James! When I think of those in the IM world that I most admire, they are the folks who are not only highly productive with their own business endeavors, but also incredibly generous in helping others succeed.

Great post. I always enjoy giving my clients a lot of free surprises when they've been with me a while. Rather than upselling any of them on a mobile site, I just made one and said, "by the way... here you go." They were all thrilled. It took 30 minutes of my time for each one, but I've gone one more step in making them a client for life.

Brilliant write up! I used to avoid doing anything free but after a while you stop seeing the green stuff and start caring more about businesses. It helps build a good client relationship and gets your foot in the door.
I started because I had a genuine interest in both marketing and making a decent income. I wasn't a fan of being a 9-5 monkey working for a boss for a limited amount of money. I hate limitations. If I continued down my chosen path I would have been stuck with a certain salary as there was no way to move up the ladder. Now I can keep building my income as much as I want and have a little extra freedom when I feel the need.
