COLD CALLING -ENOUGH LURKING...IM JUMPING IN TODAY!!

Ive been super excited about the threads on cold calling small businesses ad for the past three weeks, all I have done is read, read, read! Today I'm taking action. I will call no less than 100 businesses. ( I understand that number is key) I am selling a simple 5 page website to small businesses with the offer of a demo website first. Lets see how it goes! I will post my results--good or bad this evening!

Today is going to be a real eye opener for you.

Regardless of how the day goes,

    A) be proud you took that first step. its the hardest.

    B) Take some time, and reflect on what was said, so you can improve it
    tomorrow.

    C) Make sure you do it again tomorrow

There appear to be quite a few phone people in this forum nowadays,
and they all like to help out.

So, don't be afraid to ask for help

    again, Congrats

Wow, sounds like a great plan.

I haven't made hundred calls in a day since 2004 to be exact. It was a lot simpler back then as I worked for a company whose leads were already loaded up in their mainframe computer.

All the best to you and look forward to hear all about your positive results.

Consistency, more than numbers, is most important.

Schedule your calling for the same time(s) of the day. Don't let anything distract you.

2 hours twice a day should do you good.

Taking action is imperative when it comes to everything in life... but especially sales. So congratulations for that.
I agree with kaniganj: consistency is more important than the numbers!
Ask a lot of questions and listen closely to the feedback you get. You might get some great tips you should consider further on. If you do cold calls on a regular basis you will become really good at it.
Don't take 'NO' for a final answer. Go deeper. Ask the person who says no, what you should improve (whether it's the product, service or the way you present it on the phone) in order for him to say 'yes'.

    HI Everyone!!
Im back. I got a late start 12:30 and could only make 88 calls before 5 pm. BUT.. of that 88 calls I now have 9 Demos to do tonight and follow up on tommorow and Wednesday. Im gonna start earlier tomorrow. And to think..I almost talked myself out of this today because I started so late.

Now I do have 1 question.
I am at a loss at what to say when they say that they already have a website. Im not an SEO expert. I have managed to rank a few sites for some clients, but by no means am I an expert so I dont want to focus or promise SEO when I cannot myself deliver.

So when someone says I already have a website ...should that be the end of the conversation..What would you say?

Also..heres another one i heard today.I dont need a website..Im using Facebook. Whats a good response to that?
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement.

Occasionally I run across people like that who say they don't need a website or they're using something else like FB and it's usually not worth it trying to convince them otherwise, but I'd try to politely tell them "that's great and Facebook can be a great marketing tool, but what happens if Facebook has technical issues, changes their terms of service or goes out of business someday? I used to have people tell me they were all set because they were on MySpace - but where's MySpace today?"

Using services like Facebook and Twitter etc... are all tools you can use to market just about any business, but you should always at least own your own domain name and have a basic website that YOU control.

Keep up the great work and let us know how many of those demos you sell!

      Cheers,

I like how you put this Steve, I'm gonna say the same thing but just in a more visual way:

        Owner: We have facebook
Me: Thats awesome, you are at a competitive advantage by keeping up with modern techniques.

From my experience I would only say that just as Coca Cola has the Physical Company Brand Presence, the billboards and Xmas commercials are complimentary

So too having the ''website brand'' (my new fav word that Mojo said earlier in this thread) is like having the Coca Cola Physical Brand and then facebook and twitter are like the billboards and Xmas commercials.

Now Sir/Madam(business owner) imagine Coca Cola trying to do it in reverse i.e commercials and billboards first then Company later

        Or

Imagine No Physical Company at all just billboards and Xmas Commercials

Think this visual helps put it in perspective for them

I called almost as many people yesterday and I didn't get a single person who wanted to meet with me. My opening script was just about the same:

Hello I'm Cybria, and I'm a local web designer. I'm calling local businesses trying to drum up some business for myself and I wanted to know if you've considered getting a website for your dry cleaner? (I called mostly dry cleaners)

The vast majority were no's, and the rest mostly told me either to call back tomorrow when the owner was there or that they already had a website. I got one guy who said he'd call me back (he hasn't yet) and one who asked me how much and told me he'd talk to the owner about it. So I am trying to figure out where I went wrong if you were able to get 8 demos. Maybe I need to try another niche? Did you mention to them that you had demos?
Speaking of which, what is a demo? Is it printed and sent to the customer? Or?

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm still on my newbie legs so I need the encouragement.

I believe she is setting up actual demo websites for the potential clients.

It is simple to do using subdomains or subdirectories and a cloning device.

Once you build one site it is pretty much automated after that.

Okay, so you just show them on your laptop? Also I think I need to learn more about what to do to get them to the point where they want to see the demo.

      Couple quick thoughts.....

I didn't have time to read all the posts in detail so this may have been suggested already if so sri.

If they already have a web site how functional is it? Just ask them if they know any stats about what their site is doing for them. Chances are they don't in many cases. This is a selling point for you. (Tell them they need stats! And you can provide that. Just a simple WP plugin.)

Also the vast majority of business sites don't have an easy way to contact the business often no phone number on the first or landing page. Another selling point for you to work with.

Also many of these sites do not have a lead capture process integrated . If they do, it once again it is not on the home or landing page many times. Another point.

If you can, close them on a free evaluation of their current site, now you have opened a door. Ask for their site's url. I would suggest you develop a generic evaluation form for this purpose with all the things you know that should be contained on a great working web site today. I assume your sites have all the latest and greatest features known to work currently for SEO and lead generation. Use the evaluation for a follow up call. If their site is really bad politely tell them. ( Just remember no site is as good as the ones you make.)

They will realize that it is probably easier to have you make them a new one. (Tell them that.) Try not to allow them talk you into fixing their current mess. Just tell them it would be cheaper, than the $50-$100 hourly rate you would have to charge to repair their current site, to just have you set up a new one. (In the end you make the call. You might just offer them a lead capture WP page and add it to their current site. The possibilities are numerous.)

As for the FB stall, maybe try a statement like... "Facebook is primarily a social community not as much a commercial community" Many of your potential customers are used to seeing a traditional web site and are used to interacting with businesses through web sites. Not all FB users really know about pages and might not know how to interact especially the older demographic. A small site would compliment your Facebook page and they could easily interact together." We can cover both situations very easily, let me put something together that will economically fit your budget and get you the most value for your web dollars spent, OK?" (Then hush and let them respond first.)

Just a couple ideas I could go on and on.....

Always at least try to close on something even if small. Get them to say yes as you talk with them by asking questions in a way that demands a "yes". Incorporate this into your script. Scripts are good and just like copy writing every word needs to be purposeful.

Keep up the good work! I'm rootin for ya....

      Old Dog

P.S. Don't reveal written how to unless they contract you. Don't let them see the evaluation unless you are in control of the info. They don't need a free lunch. Leverage everything!

Good job making "only" 88 calls.

I always see posts on here about how they called 15 or 20 businesses but got nowhere. You should be ripping through hundreds of calls before even thinking about complaining. It's refreshing to hear from someone who didn't stop at a dozen!

Good job on the 9 demos from those 88 calls. Yes, number can become a key factor when it comes to cold calling and it really does help a lot.

Hmmm.. I guess when your prospects tell you that they already have a website, try to ask them if they want a revamp on their website's design. Tell them your edge on making their website but don't sound too arrogant or over-confident when you do so.

Your well on your way. Congrats again!

I was using a script..I started out by introducing myself..Hi Im Ann with ( name of my compay) but that sounded too salesmany (word?) and I could tell it was turning people off. So I changed it to Hi My name is Ann and I run a small webs design company here in ( my city) and reaching out to local business owners.....
I think I made about 2 dozen calls with only 1 demo before I changed my tune. Then I became more friendly --like a peer and it got better results. Im sure this is a work in progress. Id love to get something solid that works even better.

Love your script. It's given me an idea for an opening that I'd be comfortable with:

Hi I'm "Joe" and I run a small web design company (business / firm / studio?) here in (city), and I'm just calling around other local business owners just to say "hi", and see if there is anything I can (I'd be able to?) help with? .....And see where the conversation goes from there.......

Thank you so much for all of your feedback.

Mojo..I'm doing wordpress. BUT once I get the hang of it I will start doing mobile as well. Im gonna use the suggestion you gave about asking those who already have a website the following questions:

How many phone calls do they get per week from their website?
Do they have a way to keep in touch with people that visit their website?

Also on the other thread I posted about how to find businesses without websites, I got a really good suggestion from RentItNow He said I could reply...

"How is that working for you? You must be getting a ton of customers from it!"
This will usually lead to two choices. They are happy with their site or two, they will open up and say, "Well, not really. I keep trying to get my guy to update it but..." Then I sell them on my value, "Fast updates. Someone else on the other end of a phone call or text/email. Works fantastic!

Not had much luck with businesses without websites because you are having to sell them two things: the fact they need a site and two, your services. Uphill battle with just the first one let alone the second.

I cannot wait to try all of this tommorrow!

I'm by no means an expert in this but I would rather not say it like that in number 2, about facebook, twitter...I would say something like "utilizing special techniques on social media sites like Facebook and twitter." just so they don't get an idea of " well hey I can do that..." I've learned to not give away too much info when dealing with ANY product.

Finishing up my demo sites from yesterdays calls. Probably wont get back on the phones today until 2 which I know is late but I want to make sure I deliver the demos to the people I promised yesterday. I overthought the design. I was using the striking theme from themeforest, but then I realized that the slider was pushing the content so low on the page that I started to design my own theme and now here I am hours behind schedule. On a POSITIVE note. I tested out my duplication software and it works super! I am able to easily duplicate my demos in no time-- AND it keeps the plugin settings ! I looked into the Xcloner, but i got confused so I just went with Duplicator - a free wp plugin and its super easy. I almost bought but I got confused by all options. I highly recommend the duplicator plugin.

You can go on fiverr and have someone create a nice .psd then you can easily edit it and add in their business name etc.

If you don't want to do this I found this site from quick G search, looks promising (I think): BannerFans - Free Banner Maker

Take a look at XHeader. It is a paid tool but they do have a free version.

Free Header Graphics Software | XHeader (Not an affiliate link)

It is good if you aren't that handy with Photoshop.

If I want something besides a basic header I will generally just go to Fiverr. There are many people there that are great with graphics and for $5, you just can't beat it.

Im with Hostgator. My old clients pay $24.99 per month. They are happy to do it. I used to give full WP access and had so many clients crash their sites, have footers go missing, lose sidebars so now I have offered maintenance and I have half a dozen so far. I'm ramping up this month with a goal of 12 new customers by the end of the month. THe new people I have talked to on the phone I will charge the same price. I really want their sites to be amazing and really perform well so they wont think twice about the $25 each month. God tip n the Fiverr. I may end up there after all. No, not a soror. Just a mom with 4 kids and a drive like Whoa...LOL Its was actually Dylans thread that got me going. Im not actually offering to meet anyone..I dont want to. I do web design as a full time business and if its not over $1000, I rarely meet. I dont plan on meeting any o these clients. I advertise primarily on Craigslist and gets all of my business from there and then referrals and repeat business. Really the only reason that I want to get into this is that web design is taking me from from family. It consumes all of my time. I see the potential in hosting revenue so Im hoping to build up to 10 new clients per week. Of course that will take telemarketers and a system -- but that's where I see myself 6 months from now. *** OK, so I AM STILL sending out demos.. Im kinda anal about these headers and they have slowed production to a crawl. But I took a break from designing today and managed to make 25 calls. All Landscapers. The first 10 were all negative. But none were too rude. I was feeling kind of down so I went to Craiglist and called from a Category I know didnt have websites__ Hair Salons...The first person I called took me up on the offer! Then I got myself respect back up and went on with the landscapers...The next 15 went better, lots of Voicemail..and 2 demos! Both are very promising. One lady runs a tree service and was advertising in the Yellow Pages with no results. She is extremely excited to see what I can do for her. The other guy has a horrendous html website from the 80's (sike) and hes tired of dealing with it . He also really wants a demo and wants to see what I can do to help him. So thats 3 for the day out of 25 calls. Cybria..dont give up. Its a numbers game. Even if they say they already have a site.. keep talking. I learned that right here on the forum. I learned to say " So how is that working for you? Are you getting lots of calls from it?" then let them respond. Then I tell them about the demo offer thats available to local business owners..there no obilgation but its an opportunity to see how a redesign could benefit them and bring in more leads...If they haven't hung up by that point, Ive got them ! I know this is a super long post..BUT I got my motivation to keep going today. In fact it was a DENIAL that actually made me know I was on the right track. My last call today..the guy told me I was a month too late. He said he just started working with another designer. I asked him. How did he meet her. He said..She called me ...just like you did! It was so encouraging. Cold Calling Works... Now If I could only close a deal .. Y'all have a good evening. Demos to complete

      Nice going!

You really should farm those headers out to a designer on Fiverr. Let them make you up some basic designs in the niches you are targeting and make sure they send you the file in a PSD. Then you can change the business names and phone numbers.

A BIG timesaver and it will leave you to do what you need to do to actually make some money.

BTW...still would like to see one of your demos...

Thanks you ESG. I have another question, do you give this same talk to the "gatekeepers" should they answer the phone?

ETA: Also, I had one business owner say he didn't accept phone solicitations and that I should send him literature to his mailing address...I think it would be a worthwhile idea to do up a demo, print the homepage and include it in a sales letter along with my friendly looking picture to the left. What do you think of this? Also, do you think I could do that on a larger scale? I'm trying to think of effective ways of putting myself in front of people.

Edit: What is your current ratio of demo to client? I'm curious to know.

Just a little tip on SEO for local businesses. As long as you're doing Wordpress sites you're 99% of the way there already - these sites will rank higher in the long run than some crappy HTML site from 1976.

To further that, I would do this - when you're doing the demos or whatever, go to List Your Business on Google Maps, Yahoo Local & More | GetListed.org and type in their name and zip code into the box. The next screen will show you a percentage of completeness for their directory listings on the net. If it's anything below 20% when I would follow up with the demo and say:

"Hey I was researching your company and I noticed that you're not being listed in many of the big online directories like Google Places, Yahoo, Bing, and Yellowpages - if you're willing to invest just $xx per month I'd be happy to manage these listings for you and help get your rankings up online."

All you do from there is get their business information and plug it into the 8-10 directories and wait about a month. After the month you'll be listed in several of them, and you can provide a report (screenshot really) of the directories you've put them in.

And from there you can say "you know, if you were to be at or near the top for "landscaper city state" for just this one directory (Google Places) I bet you could get about 5 new customers a month from my research - spring is coming up - is that something you'd be interested in?"

And so on and so forth until you're making so much money you can hardly stand it.

I completely agree with offering the search engine marketing services if they already have a website. I have a dentist client that has a website already but it wasn't optimized for any keywords that would help him get found in the search engines. So I offered them a basic package $249 a month where I optimize their website, create/handle local directory profiles which are like backlinks to their website plus all the NAP (name, address & phone #) info is critical to have the same.

After a few months he has now come back to me and realized that his current website sucks and wants something more which has opened the door for me to upsell. Plus I have already been able to deliver great results just implementing what I promised.

Hats off to you for taking the step of making all of those phone calls!

      Looking forward to hearing more.

P.S. thanks for the great tip on the Duplicator plugin

OK. Quick update.. I expect to close 1 client tommorrow. We played phone tag today but she is really excited and so am I. I only made calls on Monday, and Wednesday. I have other clients that needed my attention today and I promised my partner ( hubby) that I wouldnt do any more calling I until I close the 2 big projects we have open right now. So Im off until Monday. Heres where I messed up, I think: I didnt account for the learning curve I had with Duplicator plugin so I lost lots of hours messing around. I was also determined to create my own headers and lost countless hours there as well. Bottom line. From the calls I made Monday..The demos didn't get mailed until today.. Terrible I know. I consider this week a test. This weekend I am teaching my sons how to do the demos. Ive got headers for 6 niches. Over the weekend, I am creating themes and headers for 6 more niches. My goal for next week is to get the demo over the same day and follow up within an hour. I realize that 3 days to deliver a demo is unacceptable. Any excitement the prospect would have had is now gone. If anyone else has tried this, please tell me what success you have had. Ill post tommorrow if I actually close the one client that I mentioned.

I don't necessarily think 3 days is unreasonable. People have a way of thinking that if something is too easy (in their opinion) it isn't worth very much.

They may think if you get the demos out to them within hours, there isn't much work involved hence not worth much money.

      People are funny like that.

Now once they had the demo the follow up after that should be quick.

Just my observations on how things work alot of the time.

Good luck with your potential client.

Do you mean quote? If so just press quote and your reply box will open with some code, the quote text and end code. You can modify anything after the first set of brackets and before the last set or leave it alone.

You can put your reply Before or after the quoted parts. (

Multi-Quotes- just first click the mukti-qoute button on all the posts you want to show in your reply post and then when done hit Quote and they will all show in a reply box. Just apply the rules stated above and you can edit your post to appear as you like. You can place your reply after each bracketed set or what ever you want.

If you just want a paragraph in your post just as any word processor hit enter once, twice or what ever yo want the drop down to be.

Is this what you are asking? If not ask again

      Old Dog

P.S. You can also use copy/paste and most all the common editing commands plus inserts from the top toolbar. (Pictures, audio, video)

elitesalesgroup, congrats on first being brave enough to make so many cold calls and secondly on closing your first deal! I have read through this entire thread and I am still a bit confused as to what your demo sites show to the client. For example, if you were working with a hair stylist, do you just throw up a hair stylist WordPress template and show it to them? Or do you actually make the final website for the client and present it to them and if they like it, they buy it and you transfer the files to their domain?

Well so far, I have only sold 1 site complete but I sent out 6 demos and yes everyone got the exact same demo

I made my header in such a way that all I need to do is change the logo.

Then I run a find and replace plugin and change all the company names throughout.
I have a services page where I list some generic services that are common to that industry--its easy to find on Google.
Each page is a real page..I make the demos so its useable instantly. Im really trying hard to sell them on my service. I think my price is a no brainer so my goal is to make them completely fall in love with the site and the functionality.

I also create a page called You can own this website.. with some basic info about my services and a form to checkout.

You are going to do just fine. Just keep doing it. When you find something that works tweak to it. Find a spark and pour gasoline on it.

From what you have explained you have a very nicely thought out plan and product. Just do it 10,000 more times and you and your hubby will have the freedom that success can bring.

      I'm proud for you!

      Are you using find-replace 1.5?

I wasn't aware there was a plugin for this sort of thing so I searched and this was one I found.

WP must have a plugin for everything in the world!

I would have to agree with most of what Old Dog is saying. Especailly about the FB comments. FB alone is limiting a business. It is must to intergrate it with a business website to have a full presence to the public. FB is an enhancer not a solution in itself for businesses. Michaels opinion.

I think my biggest problem is that I'd see myself running into a gatekeeper at the business most of the time, when trying to set up an appointment for my design/seo services. What are your suggestions on the gatekeepers and how to get past them.

I thought the gatekeepers would have been more of an issue as well but they weren't...If they had a gatekeeper, i found that most of the time, they also had a website they were "happy" with so I kept on moving. I will def do this again..I can only do 300 per week. I think that the biggest part is having the machine to do the demos and get them turned out on time. I imagine sending out up to 50 demos per week once I get the call volume up. Its free afterall..All I'm trying to get out of them is an email address (which I can also market to later Thanks for the heads up on the natural hair site....bummer my godaddy hosting account got infected with malware and a few of my wp sites got malware on them..Im pulling them down one by one...clearning and resubmitting google. Also...does anyone know how I can get a hold of John Durham. I bought a WSO and I need to speak with him about it. Thanks!

    Hi Teez,

Thanks for the kudos. By the way, not sure if you're a Bravo TV fan but Bethany Frankel of Bethany Ever After tv show, creator of Skinnygirl Margarita was featured Monday nite on the show in a meeting with her new web design team.

One of the things she mentioned was making sure that she followed all of the great companies who have strong websites, in strengthening her website brand too. She went on to say that it's very important that her Website reflect who and what her company brand stands for as there are many facets to her business and she wants it to be very interactive with her audience and customer base.

Her business is only about a year or so old and already she is intuitive enough to know that her website needs to keep pace with the growth of her business.

Now if only we can get ma and pa business owner up to speed
