Science of what motivates a person to buy

Advertising is not letting people know what you have or what you do. Advertising is understanding human emotion and what motivates a person to buy.

The are certain words that have been outlawed in court because it has an unfair influence over a persons mind.

Check Firm who has done work for Apple, Disney, and others said:
When you use the color blue (for most industries) as your main marketing color this will increase your results 11-15%

    Hi Chris, thanks for sharing.

How about that, colour does make a difference. Was it a particular colour blue or any old blue ?

Do you have any other information from that company, which can give us an advantage?

Take good care of those that you love.

If you have a 4x6 postcard in a direct mail campaign, IVRY beats out every time. Pastel Pink and Blue are close seconds. Pastel green comes in LAST..... unless it's a make money type offer, then it beats pastel pink and blue, but not Ivory.

The font "Tahoma" works best for headlines, but sucks for Sub-Heads. Arial BOLD outpuls Tahoma as a sub-head.

Arial works best for Body copy. But, dont use it in the call to action. "Tahoma" is more powerful.

Don't ask me why this works. It just does.

Forgot to add one thing, none of this is even relevant if the OFFER sucks, so gotta have a KILLER offer.

From a Typography point of view, Arial was initially designed as a simple, bland sans-serif font, good for large amounts of text. Whereas Tahoma has varied lengths and is known as a "Humanist" sans-serif font, this gives it a bit more legibility than other sans-serif fonts out there! Hope this helps!

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I live in Vegas, and these guys do EXTENSIVE studies on what makes people spend money.
ALL poker, craps, blackjack, roulette, etc... tables are either BLUE or GREEN.
          Does anyone think that's a co-incidence??
          Ummmmm...NO!
It makes you spend more, and less guilty for doing so.

I would have thought it would be red because it catches your eye, but maybe does not influence the reader to buy as much as blue I guess. Any other tips?

Red is a "danger" color. Our brains associate it with urgency and danger. As a FONT COLOR, it can be effective but must be used SPARINGLY - did I say sparingly?

Yup. Only use it on a single word or phrase... if compatible with the offer.

Otherwise, it is obnoxious and will deter from response.

I have a client that had me split test his traffic on a red and blue site - they were exactly the same except for the main color, and blue converted substantially better ... it is probably something to be said about how red evokes caution and fear/danger ...

I.ve been told that blue turns people off in the marketing world... Yet blue is a calming colour, comfortable colour. I suppose it depends on what your marketing. You wouldn't use blue or purple to sell mma equipment or video games or mountain climbing gear.

Orange, reds black and yellow work better together. But that's just an option.

color should be a part of your branding and should support the message you want to deliver. medium to darker blues definitely convey a sense of trust and professionalism. It's a very "safe" color to use and can convey power as well.

Reds in our profession an suggest an air of creativity, where blues definitely do not do that. Red used in retail suggest clearance items or low prices.

Offline marketers using red colors is definitely going to have a different effect than retailers using red.

Red also isn't always bright, there's darker reds like burgundy that have a very different look and appeal to them.

Blue is relaxing, while red in anxious and angry. You always want to relax a potential customer because it makes it much easier for them to pull out the checkbook. Its the same reason that you go into an auto dealership and they are playing soft rock love songs, while handing you a cup of coffee. Its all been well documented in the business.

You don't want to have lots of loud hard rock or rap songs playing with you customer slamming a cold Coke. They will not be as relaxed, their defenses will be up, and they will be much less likely to purchase.

I found some information on the color blue and why it's a good color to use when selling a product.

"Blue means loyalty and trust, and it's what you want your friends to be! Blue is the most popular of all colors universally, largely because it is the sky above and sea beyond. It truly does promote trust, and some of us can recall when police wore blue and not black and we knew them as the men in blue. It is also considered a power color among men."

according to my humble experience, there isn't a big meaning of what colors are you using and what size of a buy now button, but rather your sales letter will work if what you are saying is in resonance with visitor's mind, his thoughts

As a designer I've yet to see the why people use so much red in marketing? All the firms I've worked in have often rejected my colour schemes since Red is one of my favourite colours! Anyone have a link to where OP got their info from?

I love the science behind colors. Its interesting that your brain is making a decision for you based of a particular color and you have no say about it.

Here is a great article from Inc. about the science of colors.

Blue? is hard for me to agree with it while i using blue , my website bounce rate from 4% up to 36 percent !!!!

At 1st i thought blue color is the best color to allow people feel relax and welcome to stay longer in our site. But we get a opposite result.

I currently launching a video campaign and i need to use blue color again to meet my website template. Hopeit won't disappointing me .

This is an interesting topic. As a graphic designer I have always been intrigued by how our brain processes color and "feels" a certain way around certain colors. Strangely though, I have always been thought that red is the better color to use when selling things. This made sense as many retail stores (like Target) really focus on the color red. I wonder if it all depends on what you're selling? Maybe blue works for selling services and red for retail?

It has much to do with shades of blue...too dark it becomes a psychological "Off Switch"....too light it comes across as unprofessional or flippant, almost cartoony, and the potential client has a hard time taking you seriously.

Tones of a Color are just as important as, if not moreso, the color itself.

Long term if you really want to build businesses with huge loyal client bases you need to think beyond specific colors and words that influence people.

These are simply strategies that increase conversion.

In my opinion to have a thriving business long term in this new age of rapid widespread communication you really need 2 things:

        # 1: The willingness to really get to know your prospects and clients.

In other words who they are, what's important to them, what kinds of things they're buying, what's helping them, what's hurting them, what their needs and wants are.

        # 2: The drive to be of service and deliver genuine value to these people.

It's not about trying to get maximum conversion.

It's about building the lifetime value of clients by going out of your way to give your prospects and clients what they really need.

You should be one of the people in their lives who has their best interests and welfare at heart.

We can split test colors, headlines, fonts etc and we should.

But really caring about your prospects and clients is what's going to shine through in everything you do and modern customers are getting better and better at seeing that.

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh
