Would you get into trouble for claiming a google place without permission of the owner?

I found a keyword that pulled up the 7 pack and only 2 of them have been claimed by the owner.

I have never done and GPO and want to test it out. I was thinking of take a GP from page four and claim it. Then fill in all the correct info and add pics from their website and so on.

Do I need to ask the business owner's permission before I do my test run?

What do you think? I think you're conscience has already given you the answer to that question.

I know that people are claiming them for their clients. I am not trying to hurt the businiess. I accually want to see if I can help them.

I am just trying to see how hard it would be to move some one into the seven pack when only 2 of the seven are claimed.

I guess I'll ask someone on page 4 of the GP serp if I can try to bump their listing.

Part of the claiming process is the verification.

Phone verification would mean that Google would call the number showing for the listing. Postcard verification would have Google send a postcard to the address. You can try to claim the listing but the changes you make won't be put in place until after the verification.

Yes, the verification process would hang you up. I think it would be ethically wrong too. If you ask I'm sure you could get permission though. Do it in the office of the establishment if possible, right in front of them. It's always a kick for them to have Google call instantly. Great door opener.

I Agree. It's a great door opener for businesses who don't have a Google Places page yet. BUT you have to verify either by phone or mail so I wouldn't recommend doing it without talking to the business owner first.
