    I have a client that opened a computer repair store in 2010. I did a bunch of design work for him and convinced him to do some direct mail, which he did and got great results.

    He mentioned that he wanted to get commercial clients too so we started sending out postcards to local businesses. Over just two mailings of 2500 each he landed a few long term contracts and now doesn't even open his store except by appointment.

    I'm not really sure what the service was he was offering now but it was something to do with setting up and maintaining their computer systems.

    An offline marketing method for an IT professional? Sounds interesting, but my question is how you can convince using direct mail that you are good at what you do. I suppose you can offer some trial services and discounts through postcards, though.

      Oddly enough, many people don't need to convince others they are good at what they do. It's amazing what kind of leverage you have when you aren't desperate.

        Now that is the secret in sales. Be confident in yourself, in your product and understand that your client needs your service/product. If you are talking to someone who doesn't need it then he isn't your client. Keep talking until you find your clients and the sales come easy.

            I recommend reading E. Joseph Cossman "How I made 1,000,000 in mail order" and Joe Karbo "The Lazy Man's Way to Riches". Even though you are not looking to get into the direct response business, these books can serve you well in any of your direct mail campaign.

            Also, on this forum Boss Ross has great eBooks on direct mail. Lastly, you do want to target your campaign within a certain zip code, radius from your location or specific groups of companies or individuals.

      This is yet another ideal situation for two-step lead generation marketing.

      Instead of trying to sell computer services in the postcard or sales letter, merely offer to provide FREE information.

      Get interested prospects to raise their hands, then market to them until they "buy or die."

      The challenge I've found with any left brain types like accountants, engineers, and IT types...is they don't think outside the box. They want to do something boring or image oriented that they've seen others do. They want to "look" professional. They don't want to do long copy.

      I agree that the lead gen approach is the way to go. The other way would be to "farm" a particular demographic. Pick 500 businesses and send them something or call them every month. Like real estate agents do. Targeted branding.

  • Direct Mail does not depend on the business. Its the business which requires direct mail in order to gain more customers from any other promotional means.

    Direct mail puts your message right in front of your prospect in their own home or business. When you send the right mailing to the right list at the right time, your direct mail is a cost efficient and easy way to get customer attention and sales.
