Google Places "gurus"... a couple quick questions for ya

Hey guys,

If a particular business is listed in Google Places, but there is NOT a "homepage" URL listed in their Places page... then if I fill in the "homepage" URL for them (after I create their website), how long does it normally take for that URL to appear in their G Places listing?

I know that if you edit/update other parts of the Places page (ie the Description) that it can take up to a few weeks for the new info to appear. But if the only change you make is to include their website URL, is it updated any quicker?

Also... regarding updating the URL, does that ever have a negative affect on a Places page position in the SERPs? I know that sometimes G is kinda funny about changes... even small ones. I've never updated just the homepage URL on a Places page before, so I'm curious.

Honestly I've never updated a places page home url either. That would be if the client switched domains or something.

If you are entering the URL for the first time I'd imagine it should show up right away once Google makes the update in the database. I haven't seen it take any "long" period of time from my experience. However... Exactly at this time Places is having a lot of stupid bugs with listings so this might be what prompted you to ask about the URL.

Can the URL effect the places page rank in the serps? It most assuredly can! Now that results are merged if the home page URL links to a poorly optimized web site it can negatively effect the ranking of the place page.

    Hope this helps!

I think this is just one of those things where you gotta try and see what happens. Right away also because, once again, we're at the mercy of Google.
