The only business you'll find that has no competition is going to be a business that isn't worth operating.

Competition is an indication that there is a market for what it is you want to do. If you were to examine this forum in a certain way, you could draw the conclusion that everyone is marketing SEO in one form or another.

That tells me that there's a whole mess-o-optimizin' to be done!

Not to mention that it can be marketed in virtually limitless methods, I can't help but wonder if you're just trying to up your post count.

no, not trying to get my post count up. I was just wondering. And I tottaly agree with you. I'm pretty much in the stage of whether or not to dive into the OM market. I have done niche sites in the past, but want a better business plan than that.

7? I was talking to an SEO client of ours and he was amazed at how many companies we compete against for SEO business. I don't consider other SEO companies competition really, we just do our own thing and try to keep our clients happy.

i agree . we dont even call ourselves an SEO company. Instead we are a branding agency and people see it as a totally different thing. Its all about positioning.

There is fierce competition in my area. But we do not only consider how fierce it is, we have to consider one solution to stand out ourselves.

Google "Philadelphia SEO" and you'll find us #1. We're competing with 2 of the biggest SEO companies in America. It's a very competitive keyword but most SEO companies don't really focus too much on their keywords anyways.

Btw, it's a poor mentality to think that you're competitor already hit the city hard. Maybe they did the pre-sell and it's your time to differentiate from them and do the closing.

Plus look at it this way... if you do direct mailing and have your guys knocking on every business owner's door, you already stand out.

My mentality is Genghis Khan took over the whole world. Is it that hard to take over your city? Not even as a mayor but just as a SEO company?

haha really think about that. Hope that helps. =)

      Just a heads up:
      • Your competitors may be stealing all your potential customers from right under you, without you even knowing…

      • You may be blowing your marketing budget instead on less-effective and outdated methods, such as yellow pages and newspaper advertising which are low in ROI and hard to track…

It could be a good idea to narrow down to even more specific areas locally. I live in a small city, so it's pretty tricky for me to do that, and I have a fair bit of competition. However, you'd be surprised at just how ineffective most businesses are at reaching out to local businesses...

If you've properly positioned yourself...you'll never have competition.

Always aim to make it an Apples to Oranges comparison.

Then you can charge a premium and prospects will rush to pay it.

I'm discovering that if you differentiate yourself as a company that cares about your clients and doesn't over charge them there is a lot of work to be had.

      Hmm, that about nails it.

If you are able to turn the problem upside down and look at it from the clients WIIFM point of view eg. (what can I do for the client, how do I solve their problems) rather than what can the client to for me ($$'s) then you will get lots of referrals = lots of clients = problem solved.

los s has an excellent suggestion where they are a Branding Agency not a SEO Marketing Co. What a good idea.

Take good care of those that you love.

How to avoid the "Competition Problem?"
Sell packages. Create three packages (at three price points) that no-one
else can offer. Then offer a choice. Good - Better - Best. Ad a wrinkle that
no other SEO service can offer. Silver - Gold - Platinum.

Never ever worry about your competition. They may or may not know what they are doing. They may have contacted every business in your city and been rejected by 97% of them. Now, you may call on all of those same business and close 50% of them.

Keep in mind, the business owner may like your personality better, may like the way you presented your services better, may have had major changes in their business and are now ready to have SEO done, may have just received some good personal news and will now 'give you the time of day'. There are just too many external variables.

Just do what you do and pretend the competition doesn't even exist, because they don't, there is only one you! Go for it!
