Default Successfully Selling Leads/Calls to Local Businesses?

For those of you that are selling leads (forwarding calls and/or leasing out websites/pages) to local businesses, what kind of keywords are you targeting? Are you competing against google places, or are you getting most of your calls/traffic with other search terms (non-local/GP search terms)?

I am struggling to believe that any website that is competing against google places (regardless of the keywords that are being targeted), is generating ample, targeted/buying calls to make for an easy sell. Maybe I am wrong, but after reading about so many lead-gen/rent-a-site warriors struggling to land any clients, I am starting to wonder if most of us are just doing it wrong, or if the people that are succeeding are lying through their teeth and/or exaggerating their claims.

It isn't difficult getting ranked in most local markets...so what's the deal?

I have several sites ranked from position 1 - 5 and they all compete with Google Places. Guess What! ... I get very few leads, either phone or form. When I am using Adwords I get heaps of leads.

But Guees What! ... I can't convince anyone to buy leads or rent my site. I do have 2 clients, but it took me 2 years to get them onboard.

People that tell you it's easy to sell leads ... are full of crap. You need to be a very good sales person and you need to talk face to face.

Agreed with Lattemonarck, I have few websites which ranks well with local keywords but not generating good leads out of it. Then I have started targeting global keywords, which takes time but, I am quite sure to get good leads over a time.

Yeah Google places is really a big problem when you wanna lease sites... even if you get on the first page for a good keyword you'll only be getting trickle traffic, Google places takes away about 80 to 90 percent of all the traffic for that keyword.

I have a plumber site right below Google places, it should get about 2K a month on exact, i only get about a 100 visitors... that used to be about 900 visitors, so yeah... Google Places has killed the rent a site model.
