First day Offline and booked a Client! Here's how. (From a Newb)

What's up! I'm pretty excited. I posted earlier about my attempt to do 100 calls on my first day offline, my final result? I got my first client!
Here's How: Here's where I started today.

I began calling about 11AM. My target was Plumbers in the city. My whole script/process is streamlined in the link above. (I AM BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT. Today was my first day so don't necessarily take my process to heart.)

Essentially the IS no magic bullet with what I was doing. I'm writing just to let the New people know that it IS possible to do this! You just have to put in the work.

I'd made it to 27 calls (calls= me actually speaking to someone) and I was TIRED. I took a nap and woke up with a voicemail. It was from someone I'd called, and emailed some samples of sites that I could create for him.

Let me run that by you again.. I called several companies, and all of the people who agreed to letting me EMAIL them some samples I EMAILED THEM. I didn't take it as a rejection.. I know there is some debate about Emailing clients, but hey I'm willing to do anything (mostly) to secure a client. So I think EMAILING should be taken as a success, not a rejection.

Back to the voice mail...

I called him, and explained that I am a graphic designer looking to help build sites for local businesses. ( I use WP) It turned out that he actually had a website which looked pretty legitimate! I began to get discouraged, but he said something about SEO, and I hopped on that opportunity like a mad dog. I told him that I offer SEO services in addition to creating websites. As it turns out, he has (or had) a big SEO company who worked for him, but apparently there's something that does not sit well with him in regards to the company. He doesn't like the site anymore... it's outdated... needs to be touched up... etc..

As it turns out he REALLY liked one of the samples I sent over, and wanted something close to it. We discussed SEO and how I could help him out by first cutting costs, and second building upon what his previous company did for him.

To make a a 35 Minute phone call short...

I'm going to be creating him a new website, and providing him SEO services for 6 months. We are looking at a $1000 start up.

I'm going to send him over the "figures" tomorrow, and he wants to fall on something that is fair to the both of us.

The proof is in the pudding. If you TRY the results will come... Though I had my doubts I'm feeling good about this, and I hope this can provide a bit of inspiration for any other NEWBS who are looking to succeed... You can do it!

P.S.

I only made it 30/100 calls... but I will resume as soon as possible... Cheers!

  • Great job! Cold calling is tough, but it's nice when you can get positive results out of the gate. It's surprising to me how many internet marketers don't just pick up the phone and call, but it does involve dealing with a lot of rejection.

I use to work a 7 hour shift, with a one hour break and a 4 hour shift back to back... had two telemarketing jobs... charity in the day, and moonlioghted with mortgage leads at night. Was young trying to make any extra money for my family...

In the end the experience served me well and suffice it to say I dont work by the hour anymore!

I've pounded the phones for 12 to 14 hours many years ago, it was much easier back then. No DNC list, people were nicer, not rushed, not a million telemarketers cold calling, etc... Those really were the Good ol days, lol.
Regardless of the hours I worked I tend to agree that telemarketers are only good for four hours per day. You are really in the zone for about a 4 hour stretch performing your best, trouble is you never know how long its going to take them to hit that stretch. Maybe mid day, mabe afternoon...

Most smart business owners seem to lean toward having two four hour shifts though...instead of 8 hour days for the reason you speak of...for the business owner, the averages work out the same either way and they dont have to provide benefits...for part timers.

Yes, but he still has to actually earn the money. Note: do NOT do work in advance of payment. If they will not pay you in advance, drop them and go to their most direct competitor on your very next phone call. You are doing the right thing, now toughen up your "no" muscles for when they want to squeeze you or edit your work. And AWESOME, man!

good job bro - yeh the phones are def where you want to be if you don't mind rejection

I worked for a many call centers and man .. did it ever pay off lol

if you get a solid strategy build it up and mix it with offline advertising - news paper - radio stuffs - flyers etc = get your stuff all over the place depending on what you offer

I have a guy running all over town for me right now and saves me hours because people are calling me! hehe

Congratulations! Keep up the good work. As long as you know it's (primarily) a numbers and MINDSET game, you won't get too discouraged!

    Again, great job!

Congrats on your first client! It goes to show just how simple it is to do business when you're willing to get your hands dirty. You've already done far more than most people on this forum, just by taking that first step.

very inspiring! I'm working for a big company developing websites for small business as a outbound sales person. All our leads are not cold calling but people who have domains with us. very tough! I'd be lucky to get 4 sales/day. and that's an 8 hour shift.

I want to have my own business building sites and Seo for local businesses around my area and surrounding areas.

4 sales a day?? If you were to keep all that money for yourself, you'de be making a LOT of money.

Heck, even 1 sale a week for a client paying 500$/month for SEO work is enough.

Awesome! It's really good to read success thread.

I first read about cold calling back 2010 on John Durham's thread and it was really blessing to many who found that about calling and selling websites. I have been in school since then and I would only cold call after my final exam tomorrow.

Taking action is a measure of how bad you need it and my present situation say so. Cold calling is the way to go.

John Durham, what if one pick up a newspaper to cold call some of the businesses therein but happen that most businesses are in a different state, how do you turn things in your favour?

Be sure you keep them with you after you complete the design/seo/ranking work. You know how to do that, right?

Hopefully I didn't speak too soon!

I emailed him the price sheet yesterday, and called him to follow up. He didn't call me the rest of the day or email me back.

I got a call from his assistant who let me know he did receive the email, and he will be considering it all and get back to me today or tomorrow.

He did mention that he wanted to hire an on-site SEO specialist for his company.. which would entail me being on his payroll.. IF I can work remotely from home I will definitely take him up on that if the money is right.

Lesson: You it's not your client until you have the check IN HAND!

    wish me luck!
