Need your expert opinion on GP optimisation for client

Just a quick one really but not quite sure what to in this situation.

I am optimising both website and places listing and as it stands their listing is actually ranking pretty well at 'D'. Their website however is at 213! Dont know what they have done but get the feeling they have sandboxed their domain.

In the places listing, they have used the keyword and not their biz name in the business name field. I know that this is a big no no for GP and don't know wether to change it to biz name or not.

I've created a new site on an exact match domain and will be using this to link with the listing, felt I didn't have much to loose and everything to gain there seeing as the site is basically sandboxed. Unsure about the GP listing though?

What would you do. Change it so it is in line with the guidelines laid down and risk dropping in the short term hoping it will come back. Or keep it as it is and build citations etc with the NAP as it is? Would really appreciate your opinion!

Make it legit and warn the business owner his rankings could drop because of the change. It was done improperly and better to risk a temporary drop than a complete banning. If the owner isn't cool with that, I'd suggest you find another client.

The best advice I ever received for my business was this:

"Patrick, make it genuine, make it legitimate and do everything with integrity. Success will then take care of itself."

I've also found some business have success with this model:

Make it "look" genuine, make it "look" legitimate and make everything "look" like it's done with integrity. Success will then take care of itself.

I guess it all comes down to how you define success, then. I would define that as "selling my soul." Not taking a punch at you, rather at the one that would subscribe to such a moral code.

Thankyou. I had to make a decision today before your answers and chose to go the 'proper' route. It just makes sense really. Clients quite happy with that so all's good.

    Thanks again

I would start over, optimize correctly, including many directories and citations. It takes time but unless they selling their business in 6 months, I would start over.
