Take Action...but check your sources

So, I'm over here chomping at the bit over a strategy I read in a WSO. I'm not sitting on my laurels this time. No siree. I'm taking action!

So what had happened was

I used a lead generation tool to gather a list of sites that were supposedly not mobile ready yet. I sent an email to the business owners. And I saw my first response. Wooo! Hooo! Until I read it and this is what he said:

Arrissa, another person giving girls a bad name - I hope you are a better developer than you are at researching what your prospective clients businesses are all about. You don't see our mobile site because you failed to look for it. We have had it for 10 months. You blew it.

So I ate the humble pie and said:
Thank you for your feedback G****. I shall annotate my files. Pardon the interruption.

So embarrassing. Check and recheck your data. Lesson learned.

This reply doesn't matter at all.

All it demonstrates is that this person has no need for your services, and qualifies Out.

Taking action and sending your email around was much faster and more effective than dilly-dallying around doing research.

Every time I've done a fax blast or emailed a market, I've gotten one or two "remove me from the list" responses. But I've also gotten three or four "Hey, thanks, this is exactly what we're looking for; let's talk" replies. Those are what I want. Other responses don't matter.

Don't take the negatives personally. I find it interesting that this person took the time to write you this message. Obviously they aren't busy enough. They have some kind of issue that I would probably qualify them Out on based on personality fit. You didn't "blow it." If they didn't have a mobile site and you did something wrong in the sales process, then perhaps you would have "blown it." In this case, the suspect qualified themselves Out for you 10 months ago.

I'd have replied: "Thanks for letting me know. Quick question: how's your mobile site been performing for you over the last 10 months? Has it brought you a lot of new qualified inbound leads?"

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I'd have to agree with this^ Doesn't really mean much, to be honest. You're reading too much into it.

You're always going to run into someone who feels the need to make some sort of snarky reply to try and make you react poorly. You did the best thing by simply replying as you did.

Not long ago I did a press release and got an incredibly nastly email back from someone. So I did what you did. I wrote an email, shared with him the fact that these things happen and I'll be sure to update my database etc, etc.

This guys email was, as I say, INCREDIBLY nasty, and I'm sure I'm not the only one to receive his wrath. However, I'm pretty sure that I might have been among the very few to respond in such a way that did not challenge his nasty response, I merely acknowledged it.

We ended up exchanging a few emails, with him apologizing and ultimately giving me a few referrals.

My advice is to never ignore these folks. You just never know.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it as they qualified out.

I'd rather qualify myself out when offered a service I don;'t need and save us both time.

Honestly to that email I might reply that my automated program didn't find your mobile website. And suggest they find out why I couldn't find it.

As a business owner/manager if I got an email offering mobile websites I might test mine to make sure it came up if I thought they had looked for it and didn't find it.

Yeah don't take it personally at all. Don't even think about it anymore. Plus, I bet that person has a mobile "friendly" website instead of an actually mobile website. Do you know how many ppl say they are already doing SEO or already have SEO? Most of the time they don't even know what SEO means let alone have a fully optimize website.

You should have responded something like "Great to hear that you already have a mobile friendly website. Can I do a no obligation analysis of your site to make sure it is optimized for lead generation?" or something like that. Make it seem like it wasn't a mistake that you contacted them in the first place. Does that make sense?

Just mark this down as a lesson learned. It will only make you a better business person in the long run!

    Hope that helps,
    Sean

    Right with Sean on this.

You are in sales, no matter if you agree with me or not. There are always going to be smart mouths out there. It doesn't matter if you are selling websites, insurance, or even work at Walmart. People say things that they would not like said to them. Just let it roll of of you and go to the next prospect.

One thing I may have done is email the guy back a quick apology email and ask him what keywords he was using for his mobile site that you were not able to find it. Maybe he would be a candidate for SEO work. One never knows for sure.

I agree with the statement kaniganj...

Do not judge everything from the negative side only, just look at some of the positives we can take. But I like the title of this post, as well as "stop dreaming, start action".

Do not check and recheck your sources at the expense of prospecting. Trust in the process and stay out there prospecting. Sales is a profession and a process, not a gimmick.

We all make mistakes, every single day. They're nothing to be discouraged about. I did the very same thing you did today, but on the telephone. I got to hear a grouchy, bitter, frustrated a-hole with a rinky-dink wordpress site tell me I'm stupid.

I just thanked her for letting me know and asked her to call me when she needed help. She didn't change her mind about me and I don't expect to get any business from her someday, just because I was polite when she wasn't.

You're doing the right thing and you're on the right track. Continue to make presentations every day. The more you make the better you will do.
