I freakin hate cold calling - so I did this and it worked...

I sat down to make calls this morning. I was using a couple local papers to find good prospects. I was just not feeling it for cold calling. So I sent this (copied exactly except the name):

Hi Tom-

My name is Harry Brooks - I run a small marketing agency here in Gainesville, VA - my office is right across from Heritage Hunt. I saw your ad in the Bull Run Observer and checked out your website. Wanted to touch base with you on a couple of fronts...

First - as a local business, networking is HUGE. I get most of my business from referrals - the best kind of business. So, I always like to make new local contacts for referrals - both ways.

Second - I do great work. :-) I help local businesses get new clients using the web. Are you interested in talking for a few minutes about how I do this?

Talk soon -

Harry

Five minutes later I get this reply:

Hello Harry,

Its funny you emailed me today - I was just talking w/ my wife over the weekend about getting hooked up w/ someone in marketing to start trying to grow our business.

I'm not sure of my schedule this week but right now Wednesday morning 9-10 am is looking to be the best time for me to meet this week.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
So... One for one with this email. Since I've only used it once, I have no idea if it works beyond that, but I'm going to find out.

lol I sent about 24 emails yesterday and I got two appointments just of those 24 emails. I bet half of them have not even opened them yet, so I'll be waiting for more E-mail definitely works, you just have to find the right people to prospect to, and of course, get them interested in what you have to offer.

    Bredfan,

    Congrats.

I wouldn't swear by it, usually the open rate's aren't great, and the responses could vary.

Luckily, he was just talking to his wife about it..

You would get a better metric out of 100..200 e-mails sent, report that back :-)

I have never e-mailed personally, just direct mailed. I have seen other threads about thousands of emails sent with little response.

I don't know how anyone really was able to get email to work consistantly. I have tried it on many occasions, sometimes I pulled out a sale, many times I did not get anything at all. It is too much of a hit and miss to me.

Good job on taking action. Hopefully you are able to convert that lead.

Have you ever heard of the book "High Probability Sales" by Jacques Werth?

It's very applicable to cold calling.
    Highly recommended.

People I know who use it report more sales while spending less time and with less stress. (Although people who like the process of selling more than easy results tend not to like it)

The headline I used was "Local Business Contact."

We'll see how it goes - we're booked for Wednesday morning. I've sent onesy twosy emails before never with all that much success. Phone calls seem to work better for me. Best of all is networking (I wasn't lying in my original email!). When I first started back in 2009, BNI got me off the ground - that's a different thread...

I am no master at marketing; however, I have been associated with many fine sales trainer throughout the years. One thing I have learned is that the best success will not be the end result of only one method for obtaining prospects.

The most effective way to market is through a combination, i.e. phone and email, cc and mail. It is true that you will get business no matter what you do provided you do it enough, but I'll bet thet you''ll do even more when you use the combined approach.

Sometimes it's a matter of keeping the doors open and building credibility. Because a business fails to respond to an email or letter does not necessarily mean that they have no interest in what you do. If we appear professional we will get something eventually. Remember, you can't beat the numbers, but they can't beat you either! Persistence pays off. F.A. Perry

While one for one sounds nice....you havent gotten enough of a sampling to say whether or not it worked.

Now send out 1000 of those and come back with some solid numbers...

Oh, Wait! Unsolicited commercial email is SPAM...

Your ISP could shut you down, the recipients report you and you could be fined $500 per occurrence.

      So lets see...1000 X $500...thats a half a million dollars...

I don't know where you're located, but in the United States (where I am located and where Bredfan is located) you're absolutely allowed to send emails like this, as long as you comply with the Can-Spam act.

It's worth reading: The CAN-SPAM Act: A Compliance Guide for Business | BCP Business Center

Isn't that what any form of marketing is about - even cold calling? Getting someone to buy on the phone from you is not the norm. Getting someone to buy from a billboard on the side of the highway is not the norm...I guess it depends on how you define norm, though...

He's just saying that with hi probability you dont sell at all... You just put your offer out to as many people as you can each day and see who wants it. Some people love the sales process, hi prob sellers dont like going through all those motions. They just hit big numbers and shoot for laydowns, and get predictble results based on a system of a repeating a specific action over a large amount of numbers daily and achieving a predictable result.

Whatever that specific action is - (could even be targeted emailing).

Tweaking those repetitive actions produces measurable results... and duplicating them produces scalable results.

Using this approach any 18 year old high school drop out can produce a minimum quota of sales each day, and he can be easily duplicated.

Just saw this pop back up...I had forgotten about it....

I sent out a few more like this...maybe 6-7. I made one other appointment from it with a concrete company in my town. It was a good meeting - we both know some people from another networking group.

Haven't done any emailing beyond that....just no time for it (a good thing!).

The nonsense about SPAM - well, it's nonsense. The poster who suggested it would be SPAM was the one suggesting SPAM (send out thousands).

So I'm 2 for 8 on emails similar to this. My opinion is that by sending a personal note about how your businesses could work together in referrals or in direct sales makes it different from the people sending thousands of impersonal messages (SPAM).

2 for 8 is still well within the blind-squirrel-finds-a-nut-eventually realm. Please let us know what your conversion rate is when you reach a sample size of 1000, or you get shut down.

Spam is regulated in the U.S. and one unsolicited commercial e-mail message to a rattlesnake is all it will take to ruin your business. I think you're too close to Washington D.C. to take the risk.

I've read all the previous replies. HypeText wasn't trying to hold you back. He was trying to warn you.

Everyone has there preferred way of marketing but sending unsolicited email is permitted as long as you follow the Can Spam Act.

If done responsibly it usually doesn't cause problems, at least not for me and others I know who occasionally do it responsibly and follow the rules.

OP said that the company had advertised in a local paper, if they are advertising then they are asking to be contacted, either via email or phone, doesnt matter, they are still asking to be contacted as they are paying to advertise in a local paper which means that they will get interest and you sending them an email is interest in their company.

Listen Bee Swarm, no legal advice given, just stating my opinion just like you and the others that have posted. Its well known that if a company advertise's in a paper for example then that is them giving you the green light to make contact, why else would they pay to have their phone number and email publicly distributed?

No need to jump on me just because i only have a few posts, ive been around WF for a while but choose to take in knowledge rather than waste time in posting purely to belittle others.

Prospecting by email is my only method of finding customers. I hate cold calling and anything else that might resemble real work- just a flaw of mine.

Anyway- it can and does work, and then there are times when it doesn't. Really isn't any rhyme or reason to it...just like any other prospecting method.

Af far as CANSPAM...ask 10 people on this forum about it and you'll get 10 different answers.

I hope you don't mind, but I 'borrowed' this email wording and used it when responding privately to peoples' posts on Linkedin.

I sent maybe 5-6 last week, and figured I hadn't gotten through (I did get some folks say 'thanks but no thanks') when this morning I received an email from an electrical contractor asking me to call him. I did and set up a meeting later this week. He's a hot prospect and I strongly suspect I'll close him.

yep agreed. Like some who wins the lotto..then tells them the "system" to win the lotto.. Even a blind squireel finds his nuts ocassionally.

Send 10,000 out and then see what % close. That's more a realistic test

In my experience you can get about a 3% reply rate with email..or you can get about a 70% rate with WSO I used but you basically lied to them (but acording to the WSO selelr that was fine as it's all about geting replies nothing else.)
