Where are the results from all the systems?

For as long as I have been watching and have been active in this part of the WF, rarely has a week gone by where there is not a thread about the discovery of a new "system" as a method of getting business. These threads usually start with a phrase such as:

"what do you think?" or "this is what I plan to do" or similar sentiments. In recent weeks I can recall things like offering free websites for 6 months, taking prospects out for coffee, suggesting that you want to interview a prospect for a paper, and most recently, cheese and whiskers.

These threads, almost of necessity, generate a great deal of debate. Many times the debate becomes absolutely hostile, and eventually the tone becomes such that many of us just walk away shaking our cyber head in disbelief.

Besides these threads, the threads that appear more often are those that speak of a recent success in a marketing effort. We come here to post these threads for many reasons. We post them to teach, to share, to encourage, and maybe just because we feel like telling someone!

If you look back on these threads you'll find that they are about using traditional marketing and sales methods. Some are about email, some about direct mail, some about cold calling, and on down the line. What ties these together is the fact that they all employ traditional, ethical, and intelligent sales skills.

However, I've never seen one about one of the "systems" that were so enthusiastically debated being used successfully. Surely after some nearly violent debate someone would want to come back to say "I told you so!"

The only conclusion that I am able to come to from this is that there is no short cut to sales. The time spent (not to mention money) looking for slick ways to get in front of qualified prospects might be better spent learning and understanding what selling actually is.

Thanks for letting me vent.

They won't be back to report any success, because the don't have any. But I see them coming back all the time with new sneak-attack methods.

It's a pity that, when you try to teach them that telephone prospecting is an essential part of the sales process and how to learn it, they act like that can't be caught doing it because their parents are still alive.

      David,

Below is another new pronouncement from a member in another forum thread. I'm calling this one Business Development for Nihilists.

I won't place his name beside it to embarrass him, in case people like this can be embarrassed. But he's always advocating spam e-mail and creeping up on people you don't know to become "just-friends first."

"That's an awesome email! I truly believe we hookup with people at the exact moment we are supposed to no matter the method."

There are a few reasons why I don't come back and post about my results.

        The main reason?

People don't want to hear it.

I've settled into 2 methods that I use almost exclusively. I actually meet people face-to-face at biz meetings and *gasp* call people on the phone.

That sounds too much like work.

It's also not flashy, or shiny, or ZOMGASUPERSECRETNINJARHINOTACTICTHATNOONESEVERHEAR DOF! (tm)

        *shrugs*

So I quietly work my biz and try to give guidance to people on the forum when I can.

The systems don't bother me. I understand that a great many people are simply afraid to approach business people for any number of reasons. Some of those reasons are unfounded, and others are appropriate for that person.

So they seek out gimmicks and tricks that they find in WSO's or elsewhere. The majority of them are written by people who also have a limited understanding of sales and no desire to learn it. Because they believe that all sales people are con artists, it's OK to use a gimmick or trick.

What bothers me are blatant attacks about sales and the notion that no one wants to be "bothered" by sales people. Successful sales people that I know, and I know a lot, are among the most interesting, intelligent, well informed, and honest people I've known.

            I agree.

Salespeople are often very outgoing, engaging, and entertaining to be around.

It is discouraging to see the negative connotations that people give when they think about sales and salespeople.

I would love to share sales techniques here on the forum. I have over 15 years of sales and marketing experience - in the real world, not just online. I've conducted sales training for large organizations, and have led national lead generating campaigns.

Unfortunately, most people don't want to learn about sales techniques. Like you said, they would rather learn gimmicks and whatnot.

This is a place of commerce -- like a wal-mart but with more hype -- like a hype man on every end cap.

Mike Lantz is a brilliant man -- in many pockets of this forum have formed the foundation for perpetual growth, and perpetual greed.

The bull**** that people put out and that I am very guilty of purchasing thousands of dollars worth of as you said David -- is to distract us from what we really need to do to grow our business.

    Learn sales by selling.

However -- I think you might agree that there are methods for finding, targeting, and isolating the right people at the right time, for the right reason -- in order to do what the WF does so well.

    Sell effortlessly.

The results from the great systems are within those systems themselves -- typically not here on the WF.

The Chase Method by Mike Cooch -- Mike's business is a testament to his results. Within that WSO Mike has some astounding numbers and results. Will plug that because he does it right.

However, even published WSO's that grow very big with some fancy gimmick and promise "case studies" don't often deliver the important stats about those "case studies" anyway.

Why most people don't talk about results is because they are selling unproven crap that has a beautiful wrapper on it. The most selling they have done is creating a nice sales thread here.

All this said -- it is undeniable that there is a way to learn sales so I (will speak personally) do not waste time with ineffective methods and chasing the next shiny object -- go do it -- fail fast and hard, and learn from my mistakes.
