Do not open this if you already know how to reach millions of potential customers.

Hi warriors,

I will invest some money in a direct mail campaign and I need a sure way that my targets will open and read my sales copy, so I will hand transcribe the headline 'Do not open this letter if you already know how to reach millions of potential customers' on the back of the enveloppe.

So what do you think? can that headline be improved? will you open that letter the same way you opened this thread?

Well it got me to open the thread. In that way it works. But it does put me on guard for a "scam" or "hype" filled content. But getting read is 90% of the battle with direct mail so I say worth a try for sure!

Worked on me. 'Course, this is a forum thread, not an envelope. I'd probably open the envelope...but be ready to throw it away, too.

Worked on me too, though I am not sure that it would work the same way for business owners. These people receive dozens of mailers everyday asking them to buy services and products, so they will know that it will be a sales letter. Although it does bring some curiosity with it.

I will put this mini card inside the envelope

Now, how many of you will open the internet browser and type that link if you see your name on it?

I think an QR Code would go way better with the postcard and also have the link inside. But using the phone, scan the QR Code and bam, you offer it's in their hands.

The card is not bad, but do you really need to send it in an envelope?

It gives it one more barrier when there is a much larger chance that they will read the note if it was on a postcard. If they take a look at the envelope, the business owner might just toss it out without opening it.

From everything I've read about direct mail if you send an envelope it has to be hand written and blank except for the address and the stamp for it to potentially be opened.

I've been reading a lot about sending post cards although I haven't had time to try it I agree with Monte that its one less barrier. I've read where just simple black text on a white card works.

I did click on this thread to read it because I figured I wanted to read more but catchy titles always get me. I'm not sure I'd open the envelope though.

I am actually in search of a way to get referrals for my program, so that's why I opened the thread. But if I was not looking for that, I think i would not bother really.

Judging strictly from the number of views I would say this opening line has had mediocre to dismal results. This was a good indicator.

ithinkhard; "quit thinking so hard." lol

What he said, only I probably wouldnt open it...only opened this because I was amazed that such a headline could have so few views. Theoretically you'd think it would attract alot of attention, but in reality, everyone sees it the same way... "Thats gotta be hype". Probably the biggest thread here is simply "Make $5000 and be a hero". Thats believable.

@John, I hope that you are kidding! are you comparing a thread that just opened 24 hours ago with one that is months old?

It was months old but it had 1000 views or more its first day.

Yes, Im joking about thinking too hard, but being objective , it hasnt been the greatest experiment. usually if something doesnt blow up right out of the gate its going to be mediocre.

Im certainly not being cynical, just objective in looking at it with you. This thread was meant as a title test right?

We cant be married to mediocre things... we have to be able to separate from them...and create genius when we realize they are mediocre.

Only one in 20 threads is gonna blow up... so keep trying different titles and see whats effective...if your direct mail market is marketers then this indication here is pretty loud and clear ; Not bad, but not awesome.

Now if Paul Myers shows up and starts posting, that could be a variable that changes the outcome (although you still couldnt duplicate it) , but based on title alone it didnt blow up out of the gate.
