For Google Places Experts

A couple of weeks ago, some news was released about a change in Google's policy on showing/hiding adresses for service businesses.

As I understood it, Google now prefers for you to hide the address of the business if it generally performs it's work at the customer's location as opposed to at the business location. In the place of your address you will apply a "service radius."

After closer examination, I came to the conclusion that most customers want to see the address due to things such as determining how close the business is to them (speed of arrival and travel cost) and if the business is actually in their specific town.

Small business owners that work from home like the idea of hiding their address as it keeps their home address private and they do not have to go to the expense of getting a mail drop address for their business which as I understand it isn't even "allowed" by Google anyway although some still do it.

My question is:

Are any of you now hiding the addresses for all your service clients? I have gone in and hidden the addresses for a couple of mine just to test and while I haven't seen any change in the rankings I have noticed that no one else in any of the catagories I have checked are hiding their addresses.

What are your thoughts on this?

If hiding the address is now Google's preferred way to do things will they not penalize you if you do not do this going forward?

Thanks for any and all ideas and thoughts.

Some businesses that go to the clients location, have had their places listings drop from the map. To get them back on the map, you need to go back in the places page and hide the address.
This will usually get them back on the map.

This is just another major screw up by Google. I hid the address for one of my roofing clients and his stats have dropped terribly! Ranking hasn't changed but people want to see the address! The calls coming from the clients google places listing are not virtually nonexistent and forget about driving directions.

You hear that Google? People want to see the ADDRESS!!!!

So, what does everyone here think about how we handle this going forward?

Do we leave the address in the listing or take them out?

Do we hide them going forward or not?

Yes, by the way, I AM in the Witness Protection Program. I could tell you who I am but then I would have to kill you.

I've been thinking about his. A home based business it probably wouldn't hurt to hide the address.

But a service based business like a Plumber or Painter or whatever. I'm gonna leave it because people still want to know if a plumber or painter is by them or not.

This is one of my love/hate relationship examples with Google. Who really cares where we service our clients. If we want to show an address, let us!

        • Guys I'm a Google Top Contributor and help people in the Places forum all day long and Google is DELETING lots of listings like plumbers, carpet cleaners for not hiding address if they should be.

I totally don't agree with it and raised lots of issues on my blog.
New Google Places Guideline – Hide your Address or Risk Losing your Place Page
and I also link to some other important blog posts about it.

If you have clients that have home offices or service outbound clients only you REALLY need to carefully read all comments at the other blogs and weigh the risk/rewards. (There are many other related issues around this.)

LOTS of Place pages are being deleting every day for violating this guideline. It's nothing to mess around with.

Thanks Linda for that inside information

So for a google places listing for a service business like a carpet cleaning you are now supposed to use the option "do not show my address on my maps listing". Is this correct?

            • Here is the latest version of the actual guideline. The wording was just revised.

Google Places quality guidelines - Places Help

"If you don't conduct face-to-face business at your location, you must select the
"Do not show my business address on my Maps listing" option within your dashboard.
If you don't hide your address, your listing may be removed from Google Maps."

Now if you DO see clients or vendors at your office then you don't need to hide it
BUT you do need to be sure to answer the phone if Google calls and tell your staff
what to say too. Be ready to have a short DISTINCT answer because sometimes they
don't give you much time to answer or are from India and don't understand a long winded answer.
People in the Places forum are complaining about getting a call they can't understand and
they try to explain, get hung up on and their Place page is gone POOF.

Well isn't that just special! We are at the mercy of some one in India now who can't understand basic English, and who it appears we can't understand either so we get hung up on and our listing goes poof!

Isn't that a great way to conduct business.

PS: Linda, when are you going to change the description for GPS on your blog? LOL It does so much more and has actually been doing many things the other haven't for at least a year now.

Sorry, cuz I'm so busy I have not used it in almost a year and do not even know what it does now.
Most of what's on that page is out of date. Sorry just can't keep up.

If you can give me some brief copy I'm happy to update it.

OK, so Google didn't call me and tell me they were changing their policy on this, ha! So, today I notice my Places is gone, Poof. So, I went lokking for the issue and found this thread. So, I went into my listing and made the change to not my address. Now what? How do i get my Places page back?

anyone gone through this and got their Places page back? or is gone forever?

Google called me when this all started last month but the message was evasive. I haven't returned the calls because they don't tell me what the issue is only "about your listing" which leads me think it's a sales call to sell me advertising. Based on the policy I would not hide my address because even though it is a studio in the home (actually 2 offices) clients can and do come here.

I am curious to know how to restore a listing that gets dropped as I suspect a few customers will see this happen.

Here is a question for Russ and Linda.

I am a home based business that meets with clients from time to time at my mailing address. This is not a PO Box, but rather a mail and business office which uses a street address with a suite number attached. It's a mail and business store in a strip mall, where I collect all my business mail. Coffee shop and restaurants all around make it a convenient meeting place.

Will this pass google places terms?

In addition, I use wordpress to advertise my business locally. There are a few plugins on the market that utilize a local business address to help with SEO such as a kml file amongst others + geo tags ect.

How would you suggest using these plugins in conjunction with a Google Places listing?

One plugin in particular is WP Local Supremacy by Joe Stone- who is very hard to get a hold of to answer these questions.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.

Home based business should have all the same opportunities as brick and mortar business and should not be penalized for their need to omit a residential address for privacy sake.

This is the United States of America - where we seek equality for all things!
