Hey All,

I know what SEO on a broad scale looks like.

But how do you scale down SEO to the local level?

Anyone have any links or material I can look at?

Preferably the free type.

Thanks in advanced.

There really isnt much of a difference between seo on a broad scale and seo on a small scale.

Actually there's quite a difference if you're doing it right =) Local SEO involves more than just linkbuilding - citations, geo-tagging, etc.

To be honest, there is soooo much information here on the forum that is free, your best investment is going to be your time and reading through 100's and 100's of threads in the next few weeks.

That's not entirely correct. SEO on a broadscale requires a diverse range of link types to build rank amongst other things. Local SEO, specifically in the competitive niches require citations along with reviews as ranking factors. Conventional SEO also plays a part locally with lower traffic keywords returning organic results pages.

      Thanks Baadier!

Do you mind telling me a little more about the citation process? What it is? How you do it?

Also, as far as reviews go, is that just a matter of encouraging the patronage to get online and review?

My experience with Local Business SEO has been very good. What I do is simply target keywords related to the busines + the city they are in.

I normally create a few articles, simple videos, Google Places, Yahoo Locals and Yelp profiles and some social bookmarking but nothing heavy. Ive been able to rank clients that have low to medium competition with these types of backlinks.

Can you describe what the social bookmarking looks like for you?

Google provides data on the approximate number of monthly Global and Local searches carried out for each keyword which means that local searches do play a major role in Business. When a business is targeted locally, it is enough to be available on the net for local peoples. Hence Local Business SEO should be vitally carried out for such a kind of business.

How I did my Local Seo:

I submitted to local directories which has faster approval system
I used my city or sometimes country with my keywords
    I comment on local blogs
I post classified ads on local channels

and these processes work in getting my ranks high and boost traffic also

Another thing to remember is how does that customer search.

Do you want to target Plumber + city. Or is it better to target plumber itself and make sure on google maps you are A or B? I just did a test and for my town only one business is targeting plumber + city. The reason? That's not how we search until you get to bigger metro areas(plumber + subburb) and even then the local search with google places will be important if still not more important.

You can target keywords all you want but what matter is how real people search. It's the reason that google is pushing places up higher. When I am searching for plumber I want a local one so google gives me the places listings so I don't have to search plumber + city.

This is another reason why I tell people here to market your services locally. It will help you better understand and target for your clients.

Moved over the weekend (few blocks from beach, what up life) but I hit some leads this morning and went to work at a client's office. Gonna hit more leads later tonight and work on some ecommerce stuff for the same client - running a case study on that in education center if anyone is interested.

Local seo is getting very crowded. Every out of work tech geek is now offering a Local seo. Stay focused on 2-3 industries and then branch out to other marketing ares as the expert in the field. A appliance repair shop in san diego is more likely to hire you if you have done appliance repair shop in other cities.
