How I Made $5000 In 74 Minutes...With A Webinar

It's been awhile since I last posted to WF. I've been a member for some time and I have met some amazing people here.

One of those I met was John Spangler when I came across a thread he wrote sharing his method for getting offline clients. I read the thread and was amazed at what he shared. It instantly inspired me to go out and implement what he shared. Within a couple of days, I had some great results and within about 14 days I had built a business making 1K - 3K per project and a minimum of $500 recurring on each deal.

I continued to post my progress on John's thread and again met some pretty cool people along the way. Based on the comments in the thread, PM's and emails, I thought it would be a good idea to chronicle my daily activities on a blog. So I built one and began posting daily. I would make calls to business owners, set up my interviews, go out and meet them and turn them into clients, leaving with a check no less that $1K. Then I would come back, shoot a video and post it on my blog, often times before I had dinner.

This model work well for me and I enjoyed the accountability and the friends I made along the way. The business was up to about $7K in monthly recurring.

Then something happened.

I had a sporting accident and tore my rotator cuff. After several days of doctors visits, I had surgery to repair my left shoulder. Everything came to a screeching halt. I was laid up with one arm in a sling, taking some of the strongest pain meds available and a business in it's infant stages that was growing fast.

My focus was no longer on my business but how do I manage my pain and avoid the powerful addictive nature of the medications I was taking.

Eventually, I was able to find a compromise between the two and I could focus on my work as best I could during the healing process.

So the question became, how can I continue to do this if: 1) I'm high as a kite half the time, 2) I can't drive to meet with prospects, and 3) who's going to get the work done needed to fulfill the obligation of the clients I taken on.

So I became an expert at outsourcing first. Once I was able to hire good people and meet my obligations, I started focusing on how can I get more clients from the comfort of my recliner with a lap top.

Before I tell what I did, let me give you the gist of what I learned from John Spangler that got me to $7K monthly recurring:

I would call up small biz owners and ask to interview them. Once they agreed, I would drive out to meet with them at their business, interview them, then segue the conversation to me showing them what was wrong with their website site (there's always something that can be improved), then close them on a site redesign,a mobile site, monthly recurring....that's all. Then it's back home to start the work. If you want more on this, you must check out Spangler's thread. It is a life changer!

Here's what I do now:

I call small biz owners and schedule an interview to be conducted via the phone. Now they couldn't tell I was on pain meds because they couldn't see me. Trust me, when I was taking them and you saw me, you could tell! Using my script, I would interview them.

If they wanted to know what was wrong with their site and how to fix it, I would move them to gotomeeting and through a shared screen, I would work my magic. Once I closed them, they would be offered a package. Once they agreed, I would literally send them a paypal link while we were on the phone and walk them through payment.

This quickly took my business to $11K recurring within one week.

Now...

How I Closed A $5000 Deal With A Webinar...

I called up a biz owner and asked if she would be interested in allowing me to interview her (Spangler method). Of course since it was free publicity for her, she agreed. We set the time for that afternoon.

I completed the interview in about 20 minutes and learn she hated her website and needed SEO because she wanted to "smoke" her competitors. However, she insisted on wanting to know more about what SEO would do for her business.

The webinar was set for the following morning.

Once online, I took here through a SEO presentation and she was blown away. At the end of the presentation (only 54 minutes long), I walked her through what was going to be done and set the expectation for the work. She agreed on the site redesign and a mobile site for $5K. Then she agreed on $500/monthly for SEO work. Because we had built such great rapport, she allowed a companion to pick up my payment.

My entire business has since evolved. We are doing direct mailing now, driving them to a webinar. We are still calling and setting up interviews, moving them online, offering to fix their sites, and closing them on the phone.

I do tons of webinars with a different presentation for facebook, SEO, Mobile Services, Youtube marketing, social media, and instant income growth.

I was able to get some PLR stuff, make it my own and put together a book! It's now on Amazon. It has given me instant credibility as the expert which now allows me to command higher prices.

Now we are offering a complete "done for you services" that offers article writing, social media marketing, email marketing, mobile marketing, youtube videos...name it and for the right price, we are doing it. We are now a full service company.

Once the deals are closed, I send all the work to my outsourcers and all I focus on are getting more deals.

I freaking love it!

I was forced to make these changes to my business because I couldn't leave my house...now I choose not to leave.

I know this post is long but I wanted to really convey what has happened. And while it has evolved from the simple yet ultra effective method Spangler taught me, we are now growing every week!

P.S. After two procedures with my shoulder, I'm now 100% healed and avoided the addiction I so feared.

Good job warrior. I am sure you found what most of us find. Once you actually start its not near as difficult as you thought. The more work you design for other them more money you will make. The ole Henry Ford concept, you dont even have to know exactly how to do any one thing. Just hire those who do and bring them work.

Nice to hear about your success and that you're shoulder is fine!
Any chance you could post or pm a link of the Spangler method? I had never heard of it before until now.
    Thanks!

There is a thread half way down the page titled Jobless Dad and that has the name John Spangler as the author so I would imagine he is referring to that.

Thanks a lot for sharing this Mark. It's really incredible what you could do from your home, without meeting with your client. You could even be in a foreign country(like I am) for some of the deals and you would still close them!

You have a business in a box, Have you ever thought of selling it and maybe help some fellow warriors start their own home based business?
If you ever do and WSO to include all the details, sheets, documents, presentations, calling scripts, outsourcing tips, how to become the authority in the field and everything you used to perfect your method and business that please send me a message.

I have couple questions and maybe when you have the time you can answer if you can.

What would you say if they ask you:
    1. How do you get past the gatekeeper, reservation boy which we most stumble on? What's your introduction line and maybe you can share some tips on your 30 sec pitch explaining why you called and who are you, if you can of course
    2. What if the owner ask you: "Why interviewing on the phone? Can't you come over to our restaurant and blabla ..."
    3. How did you become an Authority? Only through the amazon book? Did you printed it and mailed to the owners as a gift or something like that?
    4. DO you have a set of questions that u use at the beginning to get the owners attention and have him follow your full presentation?
    5. How do you qualify your leads? Before calling and while you call

I would really appreciate if you could answer these questions if you have the time cause they would help me understand the process
Maybe other people have similar questions too and maybe we can all learn from your experience.

    All the best,
    Adrian

      1. I simply say, "I'm not sure who I should talk to but about an interview I would like to conduct with the owner...usually I just get transferred to them to set up the interview date and time" They will either transfer me or give me a number where I can call them. Since I'm not selling anything, the gatekeepers let you in.

2.To date, it has only happened once. Because when I setup the interview I tell them I know they are busy and this way, we can knock it be done and it allows me to get more interviews do instead of driving all over town. They understand. Not a problem.

      3. During the interview I work in the fact about the book. I also mention it during the webinar.

      4. I use interview questions...if you haven't checked out Spangler's thread, you must do so...the questions are there.

      5. As long as they are spending money on advertising, they qualify.

      Hope that helps!

I have tried amazon too, but I failed several times, In the end, life is always about CONSISTENCY. If you are not consistent enough, you'll fall of anything. Glad to hear your story. This gets even more inspiring. $5000 in 74 minutes is a lot of money for sure. Congratulations!

EDIT: If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything. That's what I am thinking, though.

I find that pretty crazy how interviews wound up getting your foot in the door. It was similar to what I did to marketing my 9x12 postcard business. While everyone else was busy giving pitches, I'd walk into these places with a survey, and basically interview the owners, would not speak a word about my business.

I'd find out how they were advertising, how much money they were spending, how much they were making in return, anything I could possibly think of I'd try to make it sound personal to the owner, and work on nothing but building a strong rapport with them.

This wasn't done because I knew how effective it would be, it was more of a gut feeling and it was just a lot easier to approach the situation that way. I wasn't selling things to strangers, I was making friends with people.

First time I did it I was able to sell all my spots in only 2 weeks. Then I developed an ever better method, although I won't be speaking about that here.

Interviews/surveys absolutely HELP to get your foot in the door. I think I learned this from all the studies/research I did in college. Some days I'd have to survey 300 people walking around campus, and I quickly learned even when people are busy, and doing something, they absolutely LOVE to talk about themselves, their life, and what makes them unique.

Definitely a lesson to be learned from all of this.

Extremely helpful. I have never thought of surveying people to get traffic....I also am not skilled enough in SEO or anything like that to tackle website redesign. Do you think this could be used for product creation or anything else? Maybe a way to find a need and solve a problem?

I believe it can honestly be used for anything.

Except if I was creating a product I would create the product first, then use the surveys to sell it. Instead of creating the surveys to figure out which product I should make (this is opposite of how a lot of people approach surveys, but I have other ways of doing market research that are more accurate than surveys, so I use surveys mainly as a selling tool).

I used them in more of a "I'm sorry to annoy you but if this survey doesn't get filled out my boss is going to fire me" type of deal. It would make most people laugh and break the ice.

Heres my biggest tip. Surveys are a tool that you can manipulate in a way so they have a VERY specific effect on the participant. I learned this in all the psych research we did at our uni. Our job was to actually REMOVE that effect. We did this by adding "filler questions" (theres another name for them I'll keep this simple for you though), and scrambling the data so there was no possible way the survey could taint the research we were doing (there is so much more to this I should really make a guide just on writing surveys).

Once I graduated college, I STOPPED doing that. And I started making my surveys bias as hell. Now let me explain, psychologist don't consider this ethical, marketers... I'm not even sure. I definitely don't think its blackhat though.

What you do is organize the questions in a specific way, getting the participant to agree with the idea you're trying to promote. If you're trying to sell taser guns, have a question like "Do you know crime rates increased by 22% in the last year?" Then another question like "Do you feel its important to protect yourself from violence".

You'd basically induce the fear effect on them. You're also getting them to commit to your idea. Once a person does this, and you try to sell them say a taser gun, and they've agreed its important to protect themselves from violence... they would rather buy the taser gun than look like a hypocrit. I also just read this in a book yesterday and never realized marketers already do this. The whole idea of "commitment/consistency" in marketing.

Its VERY powerful. Absolutely try it out. The only thing you need to master is how to deliver the offer in a way where it doesn't look like you're soliciting them, and I'm not going to write that here as it may cause some controversy. Nor do I want to hijack this thread any further as this is the OPs thread.

Redshifted I would love to learn more. I know this thread is a bit old but the info you've contributed definitely has me intrigued especially after recently listening to a Michael Sendoff interview with a guy who stated that he always used the survey technique to open all of his cold calls regardless of the industry selling environment and they worked very efficiently.

Mark, it's been great reading your posts this past weekend. I came across Jobless Dad on Saturday and I have been reading nonstop, I think I slept 4 hours.. maybe. So it's because of stories like yours and your willingness to share that I am going to be starting in tomorrow and setting up appointments with the Spangler Method as well. I bought a video camera and tripod for $70 and I'm going to try and upload the interview vids onto my new directory site (still working on it).

Your blog also inspired me to start a blog to chronicle my experience and progress too. I can't thank you and everyone here enough for how much support I feel just by reading through all of these shared experiences. You all are truly generous!
