local search volume help

Hi guys, how do you determine how much search volume a keyword gets for a local search term when Google doesn't have enough information?
Some keywords in my local market (ie town name + plumbers) shows no data in the Google keyword tool, yet there is competition on Google when you do the search for it. I'm guessing these businesses aren't competing for no traffic, but I have no idea how much traffic the businesses are getting and if it would be worth competing for that keyword.

Any advice?

In many smaller towns there is no search volume data available. But if the keywords appear in the google suggestion tool then you can be pretty sure that people ARE actually searching for it. You just can't quote any figures to prospective clients.

But even if the search volume is very low the good thing is that they are highly targeted search terms. So as long as the client gets a few new customers a month from it they will generally be happy, provide you are not charging them too much.

The best way to find the amount of search volume for local keywords is to run a Google PPC campaign with a local radius of 25 or 50 miles from your location.

Set it up and run it for 7 to 14 days or so to get a good feel for the traffic, the longer you run your campaign, the better your results will be.

You will need to set your bid high enough to trigger a 1st page place placement of your ads.

kvnkane --- I will give you my advice and it is just what I use. When dealing in the local market if you see Ads on Top and on the Right side that is a good indication that they are good. I would however add, I like going after buying or urgency keywords as well. Hope this helps...

I'm wondering the same. After reading Jason Kanigan's post here: What Should I Really Expect? Selling Websites over the Phone. I need a closer.
That is the one piece of the puzzle that is missing for me. Population of my town is about 65k, google doesnt show enough searches...

I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is.

The best is to use google adwords tool and generate the keywords and then test the keywords with google adwords and see if they been search and click on your ads.

When you see the keywords works. Login your stats and see if there is any new keywords people start searching that you never think off.

Then it is time to build long term SEO and do SEO on page and linkbuilding to the tested keywords of google adwords.

    Hope it helps.

I won't depend much on Google adwords because it often doesn't provide exact results. The "Broad" and "Exact" sometimes give the same result.

Run an adwords campaign and you will have the exact search numbers and traffic. then optimise for that traffic, then sell the site WITH optimised traffic for far more than you would otherwise have done.
