My host is demanding I update wordpress RIGHT NOW

I thought I'd let you guys know this. I've never gotten any kind of message like this and it seems important.

I use stablehost.com for hosting (which I love) and they just sent me this email...

Hello Bob -

Wordpress released Wordpress 3.3.2 this morning as there's been a security issue with 3.3.1. If you are running Wordpress, please update to 3.3.2 TODAY. We are sending this email to all users, therefore if you don't run Wordpress, you can safely ignore.

If you do run Wordpress and do not upgrade today, you will be receiving an email every day until you do upgrade. We will soon be suspending accounts that are not up to date as they are getting hacked and affecting our other customers.

Thank you,

- The SH Team

Wow,I never seen that one before. Hmm come to think of it - I have several WP blogs and today WP.org notified me via their standard updating process to auto update to WP 3.3.2
but I did not get any emails from HostGator. I just clicked to auto up date button.

Make sure you're on your actual hosting site Bob. Look for the specific domain name in the URL bar or an https:// before the URL.

If that's all good then go ahead and update! Vulnerability issues within Wordpress can pop up in 10 minutes and spread around the world! Be safe rather then sorry!

If you need any help with the Wordpress update let me know, but you should be able to 1-click update it.

      Hope that helps!

      Thanks
      Local Jake

Wordpress has a TON of security vulnerabilities most people have no idea about. And outdated wordpress site can be hacked and exploited within 5 minutes.

Usually, hostgator will email you when you have a vulnerability that has been exposed, and they take care of it for you but make you do the updates.

I got the same thing. It looks like there is a vulnerability that could jeopardize their servers. I know it's a pain in the a$$ to upgrade if you have multiple sites, but it's the trade off to get all the great benefits wordpress offers.

Must really be a problem with wordpress. I haven't seen that before either, and I am probably the slowest person here on updating my wordpress, although thanks to Iam I might have to rethink that. I did not know that there were so many vulnerabilities.

Take it from someone that went through the PITA cleanup from a wordpress hack a couple years back, take the time to upgrade now, make it a priority. It 'aint pretty, if you don't.

well that was the other thing that I learned from the experience, backup often Yes you can use a backup but even that is a hassle. I had Hostgator at the time and they had the capability to restore their backups of my sites, I did one done and still had problems so I just let it all go because i was just starting out and I chalked it up as a learning experience.

Once again I'm reminded how glad I am not to be using WordPress.
    46 domains. Argggggg!

    Suggestions:

    1. Make a backup of your Wordpress DB (you can utilize a wordpress database backup plugin to do this)
    2. If your host provides a cPanel, backup your entire installation (just in case)
    3. Upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress. We are utilizing the latest version and see no issues with it. It is worthwhile updating, but backup just in case you need to revert.

Yes, I agree. I also do this just before installing an unfamiliar plugin or experimenting with something, and that has helped more than once - a quick call or email to the hosts and they restore the to the last saved version very quickly.
