How Would You Go About Accepting Payments...

Let's say, hypothetically, you are starting a new business.

The idea of the business is to sell something via phone (by telemarketers or other means), and recurring payments will be a part of the equation.

Each of the agents will have a login ID for your website, where they can enter in customer information, including credit card info, to get payments and the ball rolling.

There's also the potential to have face-to-face meetings and the need to gather payment info from that, as well.

How would you go about setting these things up?

I see some people speak about such things and they just say "get a merchant account..." Ok... great But from where? How? hehe

Let's hear what you've got to say about things, good and bad experiences you've had with companies and providers, and just do what we can to help folks out that have these kinds of questions. (I know I am not the only one, am I?)

So. For a start... I've heard PayPal is lousy to use, because of their reputation for freezing accounts at a whim. Yet, they are also, seemingly, the easiest to use.

For me, I'd think setting up an account with them to start, and then switching to a different provider once you get more established could be an option.

So, folks... your thoughts on all of this?

There's a ton of information already here on the forum. I recommend searching for "accepting payments" or "credit card merchants" ... You'll be amazed at what you find.

In regards to PayPal not being a good option, I guess it depends on who you talk to. I've had a business account for 5 years and never had any issues. I also use authorize.net as a payment gateway and have had good experiences with them too.

Paypal is also my #1 source for accepting payments. Never had any issues with them either.

I've never had a problem with Paypal and they have awesome customer support. I would directly invoice clients via Freshbooks.com where they can have their own login and view recent transactions/invoices.

      Hope that helps,

Paypal is great if you don't need to run a lot of volume, and if you don't ever have a chargeback.

For me, paypal is not an option. When you have thousands and thousands of dollars on hold, you won't like it either.

I ran a LOT in paypal.. I made paypal more money in transaction fees, than most marketers make in a year. Paypal screwed me with less than a .01% chargeback rate... they'll screw those of you who run less money, or have a spike in sales. Want your money to be held for 6 months? Go with paypal.

Authorize.net gateways are cool, but they aren't merchant accounts, you just need to find a merchant account that sets you up with authorize.net

www.merchantinc.com is a decent way to go.

As for what the OP needs... you can create different users in your gateway for your telemarketers.

Gulf Systems - talk to Matt Mussett - they use authorize.net and are cheaper than paypal for credit card payment. And they have good cust.serv. Also, for recurring payments/subscriptions if you set it up with a bank payment it is only 45 cents per payment.

I do like paypal though with my paypal debit card. just take the cash out of my paypal acct...
