door to door leaflets in the UK?

I've got a project in mind involving a locally-aimed membership site which may well require some offline marketing.

I'm wondering if anyone in the UK has had any luck with leaflet distribution advertising an online project? There's not really many good places to put flyers up in my town - I've been looking, not many shops have flyers in the window - but we get a fair amount of leaflets delivered either on their own or with the local free papers.

It's not an approach I've tried before so I'm wondering if it's worthwhile.

my experience is no, the only print campaigns that seemed to have had any impact our postal ones for me. They say that the customer return rate for flyering is 1% but I think thats actually optimistic. Plus, social media campaigns are free or ads in newspapers are a better more efficient 'old skool' way I think.

What do you mean by a locally aimed membership site?

That's interesting - I've not looked into leaflets/flyers at all in the past. I'm waiting for a quote to come back to me from the local paper but I think they may be pretty expensive.

Oh you know, the usual drip-feeding video/ebooks/pdfs etc on how to get yourself or your business online if you're too cheap to hire a Website Designer (which I do too just in case they're not quite that cheap).

Dan - locally based for the confidence angle. Similar to Nick Sway's post recently.

I had a look at that thread. Didn't make much sense to me to be honest.

Is this the gist of it in plain English?

I am a plumber (example) and I am thinking of putting up a website or something online but don't know how to.

I see your flyer saying I can join an online club for a small monthly fee and each week I will be sent some piece of info on how to do a certain thing.

        Is that right Helena?

Hi Dan - yes close enough. The idea being either getting them to sign up for the membership site for small recurring monthly fee or doing it for them for larger one-off fee.

I know his thread says he has 500 members and I believe him but I can't see that many people in Bedford going for that.

I live in Wokingham (Near Reading) and don't see it myself.

People usually fear making wrong decisions hence the procrastinating we get these days. Things like Yellow Pages, TV and the like telling everyone to get 3 quotes for the last 20 years hasn't helped.

But once someone comes to a decision to have something they normally want it right away.

So if a plumber comes to the conclusion that he wants a website then his next train of thought will be who can make me one quickly and cheaply, not where can I go to be drip fed info so that I can learn to make one myself after a few weeks.

So if your flyer simply said 'Are you a small business thinking of having a website but don't know where to go?' or something like that then everyone who reads it, if that is the route you wish to go, will be in a market for a website not a membership site.

According to your website you can knock up a website for £300 in double quick time.

            Job done.

Anyway you may disagree so that is okay with me.

By the way, most small businesses and contractors use Book-Keepers and they are easier to approach than accountants who like to project certain imagined professionalism.

So ask some Book Keepers to distribute your flyer ,or make it look like a gift from them to their clients, with their monthly invoice.

This way your message goes straight into the hands of the relevant people without you doing a stroke of work.

Go 50:50 and bump your price a little bit as they will be saving you aquisition costs.

Do that with 10 Book Keepers and you will get work coming to you from that channel at no real cost.

Dan - you've got a very good point there, thanks for taking the time to go through it with me a bit.

I like the idea of a membership site and tried to apply it to what I know but that particular angle may well not work for such a site.

              Hmmm....

Interesting suggestion regarding book-keepers/accountants though. I may stalk a few local book-keepers and see what they think!!

              Thanks.

Flyers and leaflets might work but I prefer handing out things that people can use everyday. Of course, with my business name in them.

Helena if you d ogo the leaflet route, get them delivered via Royal Mail, so they arrive properly with the normal mail rather than being thrown in the doorway or screwed up through the letter box after closing time. Costs a bit more but better results
