I have never been able to get backgrounds to look good. What do you guys do about backgrounds and/or gradients for websites. I'm design declined. Please help me out here. I've been to the generators, and it all just seems like "too much".

looking back this should probably be in the main forum, but it is for an offline client and I know you all have dealt with this somehow.

I'm a huge fan of simplicity and white space. I guess it depends on how you sell yourself, but I prefer to promote keeping it really simple and content-centric.

If you have the eye for it, sophisticated backgrounds can be a very attractive design element. But if you get it wrong, you'll really take away from the site's flow, and therefore it's ability to convert leads.

What industry is your client in?

I agree. I don't have any fancy backgrounds on my sites. Clean with quality content.

What is the objective of this site? Is it a "brochure", a strict lead generator, a client retention tool, other?

well he's had 0 presence on the web. I'm just offering him a web presence. But my backgrounds have always done no justice. I agree plain white is okay, I just don't want it to be a dull site.

Generally, I'll start with foreground layout, then place content, and then sample different background ideas till one really catches my eye. Do you have a design in process?

Oh very nice Wage. My biggest issue with background textures was that they weren't subtle enough. This is perfect thanks very much.

Use either plain black, grey or white. Find a suitable one by using google images.

I use mostly some simple gradients. If you use a busy back ground file it will interfere with the website too much.

Simple looking websites are the orders of these days for sure. But, yes it should not look clumsy. When visitors come they should understand what the website is actually trying to say. If you can make sure of that fact that you are doing it alright on that aspect, then I think things will fall in place automatically in future.

Sometimes it's just a matter of working in the right program. Try word processing programs as well as graphics programs. You can also try online gradient builders.
