Duplicate Content For Lead Gen Sites A Problem?

Hey warriors....just need a little insight. I have a couple lead gen sites, all built using Optimize Press and I am thinking about using WP Twin to clone them.....my question is, does Google penalize people who use duplicate content??

Obviously I will change the header, keywords, and phone numbers, but I don't really want to re-write the content.

I have heard different things from no, Google doesn't penalize us because its a "local" website to yes, they frown upon it.

Thanks in advance guys!!!

  • My experience has been using duplicate content across different domains does not lead to a penalty. But given the same search, one site will out rank the other because Google will consider one to be the authority for that particular search. If you are using the same content and then building a site for another city and your searches will be city specific, then I don't think you will have a problem.

Thanks! Yes, it will be a different city with the possibility of having a different keyword.

There are 2 types of people in this world....those who get it and those who don't. The ones that get it know exactly what we are talking about. The ones who don't are left scratching their heads.

I had the same concern also. So if a lead-gen site is basically the same content, other than one is for Dallas Roofing, another for Houston Roofing etc, then it should be ok? Also different phone numbers.

PassiveIncomeTeacher is right. Having the same content will obviously affect your SEO.

The best way to do it is to avoid duplicate content period. This can be accomplished rather quickly and easily by changing up a few words here and there. I would say it wouldn't be a good idea to work for clients who are competing against each other and use similar site content for both, but I don't think that's an SEO issue, but more so an ethics issue. If they aren't competing, just change up the few words...

The best solution is to avoid duplicate content but you can remove the problem (sometimes) by changing 10% of the content. Just use a thesaurus.
With duplicate content, given the same search, one site will rank higher than the other because Google will consider one to be the authority for that particular search. Google will also take the date of publication into account, so for those publishing on their own site and in "article directories", make sure your site is indexed first.
